Remembering Mets History (2024) Sean Manaea Throws a Combined Two Hit Shut Out
Tonight, in front of 27,767 fans at Citi Field, the Carlos Mendoza's Mets hosted Rocco Baldelli's second place Minnesota Twins (58-47).
On the mound Sean Manea (6-4) went up against the Twins David Fest (1-1).
In the top of the 1st inning, Sean Manaea issued his only walk of the game, a two out walk to Royce Lewis. He then struck out Jose Miranda for his first of the night to end the inning.After retiring the next four batters, Manea gave up a base hit to Brooks Lee the first of only two hits he would allow on the night. Manaea struck out Byron Buxton to end the inning.
In the top of the 4th inning, Manea struck out Royce Lewis & Jose Miranda for his third straight strike out. Carlos Santana then singled for the last Twins hit of the game.
In the bottom of the 4th, David Festa walked Brandon Nimmo, then balked & threw a wild pitch getting Nimmo to third base. J.D. Martinez singled into centerfield bringing in Nimmo with the Mets first run.
J.D. Martinez Trivia: On July 26th, Martinez had hit a grand slam HR against the Braves & now had driven in seven runs in his last four games while collecting six hits.
In the top of the 5th, Mark Vientos hit his 15th HR of the season giving the Mets a 2-0 lead.
Mark Vientos Trivia: For Mark Vientos he would HR the next game as well, from July 24th to July 31st, Vientos collected seven hits, hit four HRs with two doubles & drove in nine runs.
Sean Manaea would retire ten batters in a row getting thru six innings allowing no runs on just two hits, striking out a season high eleven batters. He would match that total again on August 27th in a win at Arizona. Manaea would give up two runs or less while pitching at least six innings four times on the year.
In the top of the 8th Max Kepler reached on Pete Alonso's error. With one out Ryne Stanek walked Brooks Lee putting the tying run on base. After retiring Trevor Larnach, Carlos Mendoza went to Edwin Diaz for a four out save.
Diaz struck out Byron Buxton to end the inning. In the 9th inning, he struck out leadoff man Royce Lewis then retired the next two batters, with Carlos Santana lining out to Harrison Bader to end the game. Diaz collected his 13th save of the year; he would earn three saves & two wins in games where he pitched more than one inning during the regular season.
Trivia: The Mets pitchers threw eight combined shut outs during the season, with Sean Manaea starting three of them. Luis Severino & Jose Quintana both started two shut outs apiece, with Severino throwing the Mets only complete game shut out of the year.
