Remembering Mets History (2016) Curtis Granderson's Walk Off HR

Friday, May 27th, 2016: A large crowd of 43,462 showed up at Citi Field to see the reigning NL Champion Mets (28-19) host Dave Roberts' Los Angeles Dodgers (25-24) in a rematch of the previous year's NLCS. The Mets had rebounded from a losing streak where they lost six of seven games on the road from May 12th to May 19th to winning five of six on the latest homestand. On the mound Mets ace Jacob deGrom (3-1) was going for his fourth win, facing off against the Dodgers rookie Julio Urias, making his MLB debut. Urias would go 5-2 on the year. He would win twenty games in 2021 going 20-3 with an incredible .870 winning%. In the bottom of the 1st, the Mets attacked starter Julio Urias as Asdrubal Cabrera doubled & advanced to third on a wild pitch.  Then with two outs Yoenis Cespedes walked.  Neil Walker then doubled scoring Cabrera. Short Time Original Mets Player: Bobby Gene Smith (1962)

Bobby Gene Smith was born on May 28, 1934, in Hood River, Oregon. In 1952 he signed with the St. Louis Cardinals as an outfielder. From 1957-1959, he would hit .300 twice in the minors' leagues. MLB Debut: On April 16th, Gene made his MLB debut, in the 6th inning he hit a HR off the Reds Art Fowler. Smith would hit three HRs that season & just 13 in his career in 962 at bats. Trivia:  He was labeled the ultimate six o’clock hitter by Cardinal's teammate Bill White. The label meant Bobby would hit HRs in batting practice but rarely in the actual game.  From 1957-1959 he played parts of three seasons with St. Louis, as a reserve outfielder. In 1958 he was one of three Bob Smith's in the major leagues, that led him to be referred to as Bobby Gene Smith. In December 1959, Smith was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies for Carl Sawatski in. In 1960, he hit a career best .286 in 98 games with 4 HRs with 5 doubles & 27 RBIs.  Original Met: In the 1961 Expansion draft...

Danny Young: South Florida Born Mets Pitcher (2024 - 2025)

Daniel Alexander Young was born in Boynton Beach, Florida on May 27th, 1994. The six foot three lefthander, graduated from St. Andrews School in Boca Raton then attended the University of Florida. At the University of Florida, he pitched for three seasons with the Gators & was a cross-country runner. In 2015 he was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the eighth round of the draft. He would spend six years in the minor leagues with Toronto, Cleveland & Seattle. MLB Debut: On May 9th, 2022, Young made his debut in Seattle finishing off a 9-0 loss to the Phillies. He made one more appearance before getting placed on waivers in August then getting picked up by the Atlanta Braves. On August 15th he made his only appearance for the Braves finishing off a 13-7 win over the Mets, pitching 2.2 scoreless innings. In 2023 Young began the season with the Braves, making eight appearances finishing off five games with a 1.08 ERA. He was released, resigned by Atlanta then let go to free age...

Todd Hundley: Third All Time in Mets Games at Catcher (1990 - 1998)

Todd Randolph Hundley was born May 27, 1969, in Martinsville, Virginia to his parents Betty & Randy Hundley. Todd is one of four children. That year his father Randy Hundley was the catcher of the Chicago Cubs, who were battling the Amazing New York Mets for first place.  The day after Todd was born, his father Randy hit a grand slam & drove in five runs in a Cubs win against the San Francisco Giants in Candlestick Park. The five foot eleven, catcher, was drafted in the second round of the 1987 amateur draft by the New York Mets. He was highly touted prospect right from the start of his career, even throughout his school days while growing up in Illinois. After playing in A ball briefly 1987-1989, he was sent to AA Jackson in 1990 .  Mets Debut: He was pu shed right up to the major leagues, making his debut on May 18th, 1990, batting eighth & catching Frank Viola in a 6-3 Mets loss at San Diego.
