Remembering Mets History (1986) Ron Darling Goes 5-0 in May

Image
Ron Darling started out the season with his one of his worst outings of the year. In the Mets second game of the season, Ron allowed six runs in Philadelphia, the second highest amount of runs he gave up one the year while giving up two HRs in the games as well. Ron would allow two HRs in a game three times on the season. He earned no decision in the game as the potent Mets line up put up seven runs & won the game 9-7. On April 18th, he earned his first win beating the Phillies at Shea. He then took two more no decisions, which included giving up five more runs in Atlanta. He ended April 1-0 with a 6.75 ERA. In May Ronnie turned things around, winning five straight games 5-0 with a 1.63 ERA. May 4th:  In Cincinnati, the Mets gave him a three run lead in the 1st inning, led by a two run HR from Darryl Strawberry & RBI single from Ray Knight. Straw added another HR in the 3rd inning to make it 4-0. On the mound, Darling kept the Reds scoreless thru the first four innings, al...

Remembering Mets History (2005) Kaz Matsui Sets Franchise Record with Five Lead off HRs

Tuesday April 6th: On Opening Day, the Mets were in Atlanta facing the rival Braves. This season pitcher Tom Glavine who had tormented the Mets for years was now on their team signing as a free agent in the off season. The Mets had signed Japanese All Star Kaz Matsui that season as well. In his MLB debut, Matsui became the third Mets player to hit a HR in his first career at bat. Matsui homered off the Braves Russ Ortiz to start the season. Matsui had a great debut, collecting three hits with a HR & two doubles driving in three runs in the Mets 7-2 win. Wednesday April 28th: The Mets were in Los Angeles taking on the Dodgers. In the top of the 1st inning, Matsui led off the game with a HR off Odalis Perez, for his second leadoff HR of the season. Matsui would collect two hits in the game, keeping his average at .272. The Dodgers won the game 3-2, led by HRs from Adrian Beltre & Dave Roberts coming off losing pitcher Steve Trachsel. Remembering Mets History (2009) David Wright Ties Team Record With Four Stolen Bases As Mets Set a Franchise Record With Seven Stolen Bases

Image
Thursday May 14th, 2009: Jerry Manuel's New York Mets (19-15) were making an early season West Coast California trip as they went up against Bruce Bochy's Giants (18-16) in San Francisco's AT & T park. This year's Giants would finish third, but in 2010 they would win the first of three championships in five years. The Mets were struggling thru injuries, a problem that would hurt them all season. Tonight, Jose Reyes, Carlos Delgado & reliever JJ Putz were all out of action. On this night the Mets as a team would set a franchise record in stolen bases ironically without Jose Reyes in the lineup. Reyes would only play in 36 games that season. David Wright would tie another Mets record & have a big night. In the top of the 1st inning, 1st inning, Alex Cora singled, then with two outs he stole the first of his two stolen bases on the evening.  Gary Sheffield followed with an RBI base hit scoring Cora with the first run. base hit.  David Wright singled up the ...

Remembering Mets History (1984) Hubie Brooks Sets Franchise Record With a 23 Game Hit Streak

Image
In May 1984 the New York Mets were playing better baseball than they had in years. On their way to an eventual 90 win, second place finish, these Mets were a solid team.  Darryl Strawberry led the club in HRs (26) with George Foster right behind him (24). Keith Hernandez led the team in hitting (.311) & on base % (.409). While Mookie Wilson led in steals (46) & Wally Backman was second with (36). The pitching staff was led by Rookie phenom; Dwight Gooden (17-9 / 276 Ks / 2.60 ERA).  The Mets third baseman that year was Hubie Brooks, who had been with the club since 1980.  In 1984 he set a Mets record at the time with a 24 game hit streak.  May 1st: Brooks collected two hits in the Mets 8-1 win over the Cubs at Shea Stadium. In the Mets seven run 6th inning he collected his second hit of the game, a two run single helping in the win. The next night he collected an RBI double in the Mets 4-3 win over Chicago.  On May 4th as the Astros came to town,...

Remembering Mets History (1964) Mets Score Their Franchise Best Up to That Point- 19 Runs at Wrigley Field

Image
Tuesday May 26th, 1964: From 1964 thru 1966 the Mets put out their highest total of runs in a single game each year at the Friendly Confines of Wrigley Field in Chicago. Today would be a historic day in early Mets history with 19 runs scored.  Trivia: In 1965 the Mets put up double figures twice in Chicago with a season high of 14 runs on July 29th. On August 8th they also put up ten runs against the Cubs at Shea Stadium, but they lost 14-10. In 1966 the Mets single game high was also 14 runs, they did at Wrigley Field & Candlestick Park in San Francisco.  The inconsistent Mets of the early to mid sixties also had games where they were shut out or put up just one at Wrigley as well.  Todays run production was a rare event for these Mets who had only put up double figures in wins 12 times up to now since their inception in 1962. On this day a small crowd of just 2,503 came to the ball park to see Casey Stengel's Mets (12-28) take on Bob Kennedy's Cubs (14-21).  ...

(2026) Mets Rookies Carson Benge - Christian Scott - Nolan McLean & A.J. Ewing Bring Hope & Excitement To the Team for the First Time All Season

Image
In the Mets series opener this week with Detroit at Citi Field, the exciting news was that the Mets were going to bring up one of their top prospects- A.J. Ewing to try to bring some life to a rather dormant team. The Mets were also suffering thru many injuries which made the decision to bring up Ewing even easier. A.J. Ewing: The former fourth round pick went from A ball to the majors in just three seasons. In 2025 he went thru A ball St. Lucie-A ball Brooklyn then to AA Binghamton where he hit .339 & stole 12 bases in 28 games. In 2026 he hit .349 at AA Binghamton in 18 games then was promoted to AAA Syracuse where he hit .326 with  five steals in 12 games. Now the big leagues. A good crowd of 36,382 came to Citi Field as the Mets (15-25) took on A.J. Hinch's Tigers (19-23). The starting pitchers were Freddy Peralta (2-3) who had lost his last two starts guving up five runs in 11.1 innings & an equally struggling Jack Flaherty (0-3). Things went quiet in the 1st inning. ...
