Remembering Mets History (1985) Keith Hernandez Multi-Four Hit Night Leads Mets 20 Hit Attack in Montreal
Thursday August 8, 1985: Davey Johnson's Mets (63-42) had taken over first place in the NL East two days earlier. In that game Dwight Gooden won his 11th straight decision setting a new club record once held by Tom Seaver.
After taking three of four at Wrigley Field to start the road trip, the Mets were in Montreal, Canada facing Jim Fanning's third place Expos (59-48).
A Stade Olympique crowd of 24,919 came on to see New York's Rick Aguilera (4-3) take on the Expos Joe Hesketh (8-5)
In the top of the 1st, with one out, short time MLB veteran, Tom Paciorek walked & stole second. Keith Hernandez, then singled bringing in Paciorek to make it 1-0 Mets.

In the top of the 2nd, the Mets came back. Ray Knight singled, then the pitcher Rick Aguilera doubled, putting runners on second & third. Wally Backman's fielder's choice brought home Ray Knight with the Mets second run, but Aguilera got thrown out at third.
With two outs, Tom Paciorek doubled putting two men on again for Keith Hernandez. Keith followed with his 25th double of the year, bringing in both Backman & Paciorek giving the Mets a 4-3 lead. It was his second hit & third RBIs of the game.
Gary Carter followed with his second hit of the game, bringing in the Mets 12th run as Paciorek crossed the plate. Carter now had 54 RBIs on the season. George Foster added a base hit that brought home Hernandez to make it 13-6 Mets.
George Foster had a multi-three hit game as well, with a HR with & three RBIs. Wally Backman collected two hits, with three RBIs & two runs scored.
Tom Paciorek scored three runs on the night, with a walk & base hit. Gary Carter, Ray Knight, Daryl Strawberry & Rafael Santana all had two hits each.

Keith Trivia: From August 3rd to August 12th, he would collect 15 hits & drive in 12 runs over the eight games. This was Keith's third multi-four hit game of the season he would finish with seven games where he collected four or more hits.
In the top of the 8th, Darryl Strawberry hit his 16th HR of the year, tying Foster for the team lead. The solo shot off Gary Lucas led off the inning & capped off the Mets scoring.
The Mets went on to the 14-7 win, collecting twenty hits on the night, along with three HRs.
Keith Hernandez led the Mets attack with a five-hit game, driving in three runs & scoring three runs. He kept his season average above the .300 mark.

Rick Aguilera gave up seven runs in five innings but was bailed out by the Mets bats to earn his fifth win (5-3). Terry Leach came on to pitch four scoreless innings, getting credit for a save.
Mets Trivia: The Mets won their fourth game in a row as they were in the middle of a nine-game winning streak. They would win 12 of 13 in this stretch.
The 1985 Mets would score 14 runs or more five times on the season, topping off with three 16 run games.
