Remembering Mets History (1973) Jerry Koosman Wins April NL Pitcher of the Month

Wednesday April 11th, 1973:   In his first start of the 1973 season,  Jerry Koosman took the mound in the first Mets Road  game of the year which was at St. Louis. They had taken the first two games at home.  Koosman went up against the Cardinals Reggie Cleveland in front of 12,290 fans in a Busch Stadium night game. The Mets helped out Koosman right away in the 1st inning. as Bud Harrelson, Felix Millan & John Milner all singled.  Reggie Cleveland then threw a wild pitch to Rusty Staub, scoring Harrelson from third for the first run. Staub then poked a base hit thru the infield, scoring Millan putting the Mets up 2-0. In the 3rd inning, first baseman John Milner hit his first HR of the season to make it 3-0 Mets. After getting through the first two innings, Koosman gave up a leadoff triple to Jose Cruz in the 3rd inning. Remembering Mets History (1980) Pete Falcone Ties MLB Record Striking Out the First Six Batters of a Game

Thursday May 1st, 1980: A small crowd of just 5,928 came out to Shea Stadium, to see Joe Torre's Mets (6-11) who were already in fifth place, take on the eventual 1980 World Champion Philadelphia Phillies (7-9) led by manager Dallas Green. Tonight, an old Mets nemesis, "Lefty" Steve Carlton took on Brooklyn's own Pete Falcone. The game would start out with Mets pitcher, Pete Falcone striking out the first six batters he faced. At the time he had tied a then MLB record, done four times, to start a game. This set a Mets franchise record that stood for 34 years until 2014, when Jacob DeGrom struck out eight Marlins to start the game, tying a new MLB record. In the top of the 1st inning, Falcone struck out Lonnie Smith & Pete Rose swinging. "The Glider" Ed Charles: 1969 World Champion Mets Third Baseman (1967 - 1969)

Edwin Douglas Charles was born on April 29, 1933, in Daytona Beach, Florida. Charles grew up in a poor house in a family of nine children in the segregated south. He suffered the serious conditions of racism but overcame his hardships. Ed was once a school dropout who later educated himself to earning a college degree later in life. His childhood hero was Jackie Robinson whose Brooklyn Dodgers played Spring Training in Charles childhood town. He would follow Robinson out of the ballpark onto the team bus with the other black children in awe of their hero. (2025) Brandon Nimmo Ties Franchise Record with Nine RBI Game in 19-5 Win in D.C.

  Monday April 28th, 2025: On this Monday matinee, on "get away day" the Mets tried to even the series with the Nationals in D.C. The Mets were coming off their worst loss of the year, blowing a 6-0 lead the previous game.  This afternoon Mets manager Carlos Mendoza sent Griffin Canning to the mound. Canning a pleasant surprise for the Mets came in at 3-1 with a 3.12 ERA. He would go up against The Nat's Trevor Williams. Williams pitched for the 2022 Mets going 3-5 making nine starts in 30 appearances with a 3.21 ERA. After a quiet 1st inning thing started brewing in the next inning. In the top of the 2nd, Mark Vientos singled to right field. Brandon Nimmo collected his first hit of the day with a single to centerfield. Francisco Alvarez doubled bringing in Vientos & Jeff McNeil's sac fly made it 2-0. In the top of the 5th, Jeff McNeil hit his first HR of the season making it 3-0.
