Remembering Mets History (2005) David Wright Has a Six RBI Night In San Diego -the Night After Making the Catch of The Year
Wednesday August 10th, 2005: Although the Mets were in fifth place, Willie Randolph's team was playing its best baseball since the pennant season of 2000.
They were 58-55 just seven- and one-half games out of first place. Tonight, they were out west to San Diego, taking on Bruce Bochy's first place Padres (57-56).
The Padres would win the NL Western Division that year & again the following season in 2006. Both times they would fall to the St. Louis Cardinals in the NLDS.
A big crowd of 43,162 came out to Petco Park to see The Mets Kris Benson (7-4) went up against the Padres Brian Lawrence (6-11).
In the top of the 1st inning, Miquel Cairo singled, then Carlos Beltran was hit by a pitch. David Wright singled to right field scoring Cairo with the Mets first run. With Mike Piazza at bat, Carlos Beltran stole home making it a 2-0 Mets lead.
In the top of the 3rd, Miquel Cairo hit his 14th double of the year to start the inning. Next Carlos Beltran drew a walk. After Cliff Floyd flew out, Davd Wright doubled down the left field line bringing in both Cairo & Beltran, making it a 4-0 Mets lead.

David Wright Doubles Trivia: It was Wright's 30th double of the season, he would hit a career high 42 that year. From 2005-2010 he would have six straight seasons with 30 or more doubles.
Jose Offerman added an RBI base hit scoring Wright with the Mets fifth run, 5-0.
In the top of the 4th, Carlos Beltran doubled down the left field line for his 26th double of the year as he reached base for the third time in the game. Cliff Floyd was then intentionally walked.

With two men on facing Brian Lawrence, David Wright came up hitting hit his 17th HR of the year, the three-run shot put the Mets up 8-0.
David Wright Trivia: For Wright he had a season high multi-six RBI game getting him to 70 RBIs on the season. In his career Wright would have three muti-six RBI games. On August 5th, 2004, in Milwaukee, he drove in six runs led by a three run HR, in an 11-6 win over the Brewers. On September 12th, 2009, Wright hit two HRs while driving in six runs in a 10-9 win at Philadelphia.
The young Wright would have 29 multi-RBI games that season, collecting four or more RBIs in a game three times.
This HR got Padre pitcher Brian Lawrence knocked out of the game. In 3.2 innings, he allowed eight runs on eight hits, two walks with two Ks as his ERA went to 4.80.Kris Benson went out having one of his best nights in a Mets uniform. Benson would pitch into the 9th inning, giving up just one run on three hits while striking out six batters, earning his eighth win of the year (8-4).
Danny Graves would come on to finish the game out.
Trivia: In his past eight games from the start of August, Wright had two HRs with 14 RBIs while collecting 11 hits. Dating back to July 21st, he had 23 RBIs & 25 hits in 19 games while batting .368 with a 1.033 OPS.
David Wright would finish the year batting .306 the first of five straight .300 plus seasons for Wright. He would drive in 102 runs the first of four straight 100 plus RBI seasons.
Play of the Year: The previous night Wright had made what was voted on as the MLB Play of the Year, making a bare-handed catch in shallow left field on a Brian Giles pop up.
