Remembering Mets History (2024) Francisco Lindor's Grand Slam Multi-HR Five RBI Game Leads Mets in San Diego

Saturday August 24th, 2024:  The Mets (67-62) had spilt the first two games of a big series in San Diego with Mike Shildt's Padres (73-57). In August the Padres were 13-6 moving them up to the second wild card spot. After a tremendous July, the Mets were 9-10 in August falling three games behind the third wild card spot.

This was a big series & big road trip for New York as it took them to both San Diego & Arizona who were atop the wild card standings.

Today the Mets David Peterson (7-1) went up against the friars Michael King (11-6) in front of 42,284 at Petco Park.

In the top of the 1st, Michael King issued walks to Mark Vientos & Brandon Nommo. Pete Alonso followed with his 29th double of the season bringing in Vientos with the Mets first run.

In the top of the 4th, with two outs Starling Marte singled to right field. Francisco Alvarez reached on a Manny Machado error & Jeff McNeil was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Francisco Lindor then hit a grand slam HR, his 27th HR of the season giving the Mets a 5-0 lead. It was Lindor's seventh career grand slam HR, his fifth as a Mets player.

The Mets fan in attendance at Petco Park chanted "MVP-MVP" similar to the chants the hot hitting Lindor has been hearing at Citi Field.

In the top of the 7th inning, Lindor led off with his second HR of the game, this solo shot coming
off Yuki Matsui giving the Mets a 6-1 lead. It was his 27th HR of the season, tying Pete Alonso for the team lead 7 the five RBI game gave him a team best 78 on the season.

Francisco Lindor Trivia: Francisco Lindor was in the midst of a career best 16 game hit-streak, the longest Mets hit streak since Jeff McNeil's 16 game hit streak in 2021. Lindor had also reached base safely in 19 straight games, in the midst of a franchise record tying streak of reaching base safely in 35 straight games. He is the only Mets player to have that streak in the same season.

For David Peterson he pitched into the 8th inning, holding the Padres to a run on five hits. He struck out two & walked two earning his third straight win, getting him to 8-1 for the year.

It was the fifth straight start that David Peterson had allowed two earned runs or less, lowering his season ERA to 2.85.

The Mets remained two games behind the Braves for the third wild card spot in the tight NL playoff race.
