Remembering Mets History (2024) Luis Severino Throws a Complete Game Shutout

Saturday August 17th, 2024: Carlos Mendoza's Mets (63-59) had been the most winningest team in baseball since June & were in the heat of a tight wild card race trailing the Braves by one game for the last wild-card spot. In this late afternoon game at Citi Field, as the Mets donned their grey City-connect uniforms, they hosted the Miami Marlins (45-77) in front of 34,744.

Luis Severino (7-6) got the start against the Marlins Max Meyer (3-2). Severino had come off three straight poor performances giving up 15 runs in his last three games over 13 innings.

In the bottom of the 1st inning, Francisco Lindor led off the game with is 24th HR of the season giving the Mets a 1-0 lead. Lindor extended his hit streak to eleven games & he had reached base safely in his last 16 games.

In the bottom of the 2nd, Pete Alonso led off the inning with his team leading 27th HR of the season for a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the 3rd, Brandon Nimmo hit his third triple of the season. Nimmo was one of four Mets players who hit three triples in the 2024 season.

With two outs, Jesse Winker singled to right field bringing in Nimmo with the Mets third run. It
was his 13th hit & third Mets RBI since arriving from Washington on July 28th.

In the bottom of the 4th, Francisco Lindor drew a two out walk, Mark Vientos then doubled to left field as Lindor scored the Mets fourth run, his seventh run scored in his last five games.

It was Severino's second career complete game shutout, having thrown one on May 2nd, 2018, against the Astros. On April 23rd, 2021, Jacob deGrom was the last Mets pitcher to have thrown a complete game shutout.

On the mound, Luis Severino had allowed just three hits thru the first five innings. A leadoff single in the 3rd, a leadoff double in the 4th & a one out double in the 5th inning. Severino then retired the next batters in a row until Nick Fortes hit the Marlins third double of the game.

As he exited in the 8th inning he waved to the cheering crowd. Severino & manager Carlos Mendoza had a talk in the dugout & after 94 pitches, Mendoza decided to keep Sevy in the game.

In the top of the 9th, Severino hit Jake Burger with a pitch, he then retired the next two batters with a pair of strike outs, ending the game striking out Derek Hill to end the game.

Severino finished the game with a complete game shutout, giving up just four hits, striking out eight & walking one also hitting a batter. It was his second career complete game shutout, having thrown one against Houston in 2018.

Quotes- Luis Severino: "I feel good, I feel healthy. I haven't felt like this in a while. When you feel healthy, its better to compete. I was working on tipping my & my secondary pitches. I added a couple of more pitches, sinker, sweeper & a little bit of a cutter."

Trivia: In April 2021 Jacob deGrom had pitched the last Mets complete game shutout. This was the only complete game shutout thrown by Mets pitching this season.
