Remembering Mets History (2005) Mike Jacobs Has A Slugging Start To His Career

Sunday August 21st, 2005:
Willie Randolph's Mets (63-60) were in fifth place but just six games out of first place &in a wild card hunt.

On this day they hosted Frank Robinson's Washington Nationals (69-59). Kris Benson & the Mets took a 7-4 loss but brought up a young rookie named Mike Jacobs.

In the bottom of the 5th inning, Jacobs came to bat as a pinch hitter for pitcher Juan Padilla. In his first career at bat, he hit a three run HR off Estaban Loaiza.

Mets Trivia: Jacobs became the fourth Mets Player in franchise history to hit a HR in their first career at bat. Benny Ayala (1974) Mike Fitzgerald (1983) & Kaz Matsui (2004).

Mike Jacobs would get the start the next day but go 0-4 in a 4-1 Mets win at Arizona.

Tuesday August 22, 2005: The Mets had a huge offensive night on this date, scoring 14 runs bashing out 17 hits. David Wright had a multi-three-hit game, driving in a pair of runs. Ramon Castro had a bigger night driving in five runs with two hits on the evening. That night two young Mets players Victor Diaz & Mike Jacobs both drove in two runs each.

Jacobs quickly began seeing regular playing time at first base, as Doug Mientkiewicz & Chris Woodward had been sharing the job.

In the top of the 5th inning, David Wright drew a one out walk. With two outs, Jacobs connected for a two run HR off Claudio Vargas giving the Mets an 8-1 lead. It was Jacobs second HR in his three career big league games.

Wednesday August 24th, 2005:
The Mets exploded for an even bigger night, their biggest night of the year scoring 18 runs with 20 hits. New York put up two big five run innings in the game. David Wright had a multi-four hit, two HR night raising his average to .314.

Jose Reyes also had a multi-four hit game, with a HR while driving in four runs. Kaz Matsui reached base four times, as he collected three hits & a walk. Ramon Castro drove in two runs & pitcher Jae Seo had an RBI double along with a fielder's choice RBI.

Once again the young Mike Jacobs had another big game, collecting four hits while connecting for two HRs with three RBIs.

In the top of the 2nd, with Victor Diaz on third, Jacobs hit a two run HR off Russ Ortiz putting the Mets up 3-0.

In the top of the 9th inning Jacobs hit his second HR of the night, his fourth in as many games with a solo shot off Jose Valverde.

Jacobs had hit four HRs in his first 12 MLB at bats, impressing everyone with his power, and becoming the talk of the ball club. The Mets were on a win streak with him in the lineup & got to within one game of the wild card before fading away.

Jacobs finished the season with 11 HRs & 23 at bats in thirty games with just 100 at bats. He was quickly being labeled the slugging first baseman of the Mets future. Things worked out differently as that winter he was sent to the Florida Marlins in exchange for Carlos Delgado.

Mike Jacobs had a couple of good seasons in Florida, in 2008 he hit 32 HRs with 93 RBIs. But injuries & other setbacks, had him only play in seven MLB seasons hitting 100 career HRs in 569 games.
