Remembering Mets History (2016) Wilmer Flores Ties Club Record with Six Hits In a Game

Sunday July 3rd, 2016: The Mets had returned home after being swept in Washington D.C. The reigning NL Champs continued to struggle, losing eight of their last twelve games.

Terry Collins Mets (40-37) were hosting Joe Maddon's first place Cubs (51-27) in front of 36,137 fans at Citi Field.

The previous October, the Mets swept the Cubs in the 2015 NLCS to advance to the World Series.

The Mets picked up where they left off with the Cubs, taking the first three games of the four-game set. On this Sunday they went for the sweep. The starting pitchers were two of the best, as Noah Syndergaard (8-3) went up against Jon Lester (9-3).

In the top of the 1st, Jason Heyward doubled & scored on Anthony Rizzo's base hit.

In the bottom of the 1st, Curtis Granderson returning after four games with an injured calf, hit a solo HR to tie the game.

In the bottom of the 2nd Wilmer Flores started the inning with his second HR of the season & his first hit of the day.

Matt Reynolds doubled to right field, then Rene Rivera hit a two run HR, for his 3rd HR of the year giving the Mets a 4-1 lead.

Noah Syndergaard walked & advanced to 3rd on Juan Lagares' double. Curtis Granderson collected his second hit & RBI as he singled in Syndergaard.

Yoenis Cespedes followed with a single scoring Lagares to make it 6-1 Mets. Neil Walker followed with an RBI single to right field for the Mets third straight RBI hit.

Wilmer Flores made it four straight RBI hits as he singled to left scoring Cespedes. It was Wilmer's second hit & RBI in the big inning.

The Mets sent 14 men to the plate, scoring seven runs on eight hits giving them an 8-1 lead. Jon Lester was relieved after giving up eight runs on nine hits in his worst outing of the year.

In the bottom of the 4th, Wilmer Flors got his third hit of the game leading off with a base hit thru the hole. Rene Rivera drove him in with a single to right field making it 9-1.

In the bottom of the 5th, after Spencer Patton struck out Granderson & Cespedes, Neil Walker singled. Wilmer Flores then hit his second HR of the day a two-run shot to make it 11-1 Mets. Wilmer had his first multi-four hit game of the season & third of his career.

In the bottom of the 7th, Cubs pitcher Joel Peralta hit Brandon Nimmo with a pitch. Kelly Johnson joined the hitting fun belting a two-run HR to give the Mets a 13-1 lead. It was the Mets fifth HR of the afternoon. The next batter was Wilmer Flores who collected his fifth hit of the game, with a line drive single, leaving him one shy of the franchise record.

In the bottom of the 8th, Juan Lagares singled to center, for his second hit of the game. Jacob deGrom got a pinch-hit appearance, batting for Antonio Bastardo, as he flew out to left field. But then Kelly Johnson, reached on an infield hit for his second hit of the game with a base hit.

Mets Record- Most Hits in a Game: Next Wilmer Flores tied a Mets franchise record, with his sixth hit of the game, tying Edgardo Alfonzo's team record set in 1999. Flores hit two HRs, with four singles, four runs driven in & three runs scored.

Quotes: Wilmer Flores: "Unbelievable feeling, Six hits? I never thought I was going to get six hits ever. But it happened. I put good swings on the ball."

Noah Syndergaard the ace of the 2016 staff, earned his ninth win of the year (9-4) as he allowed just one run in seven innings of work, lowering his ERA to 2.41. He struck out eight & walked no one. At bat Noah also collected a double & scored a run.

The Mets had no problem sweeping the Cubs again just as they had left off in the NLCS. In this game they put up a season high 14 runs with 22 hits. Seven different Mets had a multi-hit game on the day, but Wilmer Flores who had been struggling as of late, had the biggest day of all.

Mets Trivia:
It was the first time the Mets swept the Cubs in a four game regular season series since 1985. Some called it the ghosts of 1969, or the black cat's spirit from the 1969 Black Cat game at Shea. Whatever it was, the Cubs were happy to leave New York.

Quotes- Cubs Manager Joe Maddon: "It was a rough weekend -- give the Mets credit. They really swung the bats well, and of course, they always pitch well. They got us this time; they got us last year at the end of the season. For me, it's keep moving it forward. This is an easy game for me to forget about."
