(2025) Brandon Nimmo Hits His Second Grand Slam of the Week & Pete Alonso Has a Multi-HR Game in Subway Series Win

After the Mets had got swept in Pittsburgh the previous weekend, they had lost 13 of 16 games, their worst stretch of the season. After dropping the first game on the home stand, they had won three straight including the first game of the subway series Citi Field series.

This afternoon 41,401 attended Citi Field on a beautiful sunny day as Carlos Mendoza's Mets (51-38) hosted Aaron Boone's AL New York team's (48-41).  For the Mets Frankie Montas made his third start of the season facing New York starter Carlos Rendon.

In the bottom of the 1st inning, Starling Marte led off with a double to centerfield. Francisco
Lindor followed with a walk. Juan Soto then surprised everyone & for some reason dropped a bunt, which advanced the runners, but he was thrown out at first. Pete Alonso then drew a walk to load the bases.

Brandon Nimmo followed with a grand slam HR, giving the Mets the 4-0 lead. For Nimmo it was his second grand slam of the week, as he had hit one four days earlier in the second game of a double header leading the Mets to a 7-3 win. It was his fourth career grand slam. To start out July, Nimmo has seven hits, three HRs & nine RBIs in five games.

Mets Grand Slam Triva: Nimmo is the fifth Mets player in franchise history to hit three grand slams in a season joining John Milner (1972) Robin Ventura (1999) Mike Piazza (2000) & Carlos Beltran (2006).

Quotes- Brandon Nimmo "To have two grand slams in a week, it's pretty crazy."

Alonso HR Trivia: For Pete it was his third multi-HR game of the season & his third multi-five RBI game. It was Alonso's 20th HR (8th in the NL) & he reached 73 RBIs (2nd in the NL) on the season. Pete also moved to within seven HRs of Darryl Strawberry's all time franchise record 252 HRs.

The Citi Field crowd also kept on chanting for Alonso & got a curtain call, as Keith Hernandez said, like the good old days.
