Remembering Mets History (2025) Mets Sweep Series with Another Walk-Off Win on a Perfect Home Stand

Thursday April 17th 2025: Although the Mets had just dropped two games in a three game set in Minnesota, they were 11-7 one game up on top of the NL East. Carlos Mendoza's Mets (11-7) opened up a four game series with Oliver Marmol's St. Louis Cardinals (9-9)

In the bottom of the 2nd, Mark Vientos led off with a HR off Andre Pallante. It was his first HR of the year for the struggling Vientos who was hitting just .145.

With two outs & Starling Marte on second, the Mets hit three straight base hits. First Bret Baty singled to left scoring Marte with the second run. Tyrone Taylor singled then Francisco Lindor delivered a two run single but was thrown out at third to end the inning. It was 4-0 New York.

On the mound, Griffin Canning who had won a spot in the Mets rotation & turned out to be a pleasant surprise had another fine night as he allowed just one run in six innings while striking out his season best eight batters earning his second win (2-1). Reed Garrett, A.J Minter & Edwin Diaz closed it out.

Friday April 18th: The Cards scored first with two RBI singles off David Peterson. In the bottom of the 5th, Bret Baty doubled to right field, then Tyrone Taylor triples to right scoring Baty. 

Tyrone Taylor Trivia: It was Taylor's second triple in his last six games, he would hit three triples on the season. Taylor has hit three triples in a season four times in his career.

Juan Soto then drove in his 8th run of the season with a single to center tying up the game.

In top of the 6th, St. Louis got a lead off double from Wilson Contreras & an RBI single from Nolan Arendao to go ahead. In the bottom of the 6th, Mark Vientos homered in his second straight game tying the game back up at three.

In the bottom of the 8th, Mark Vientos collected his second hit with a single to left field. Luisangel Acuna came in to run but was erased on a force by Brandon Nimmo. 

Nimmo advanced to second on Phil Maton's throwing error. Catcher Luis Torrens then doubled to left field putting the Mets ahead 4-3.

In the top of the 9th, Huascar Brazoban blew the lead with a lead off HR to Brendan Donovan.

Walk Off HR: In the bottom of the 9th, Francisco Lindor hit a walk off HR to win the game. It was his second walk off HR of the young season & career HR 250.

Saturday April 19th: In this afternoons game, four pitchers threw a combined 3-0 shut out, led by Kodai Senga who pitched 5.2 innings giving up just three hits, two walks while striking out four collected his third win (3-1) 

Kodai Trivia: Thru his first four starts, Senga had allowed just two earned runs in 22.2 innings pitched for a 0.79 ERA. He had also amassed twenty strike outs. 

Reed Garrett, AJ Minter & Edwin Diaz closed it out with Diaz earning his fifth save.

In the bottom of the 3rd inning, Juan Soto drove in the Mets first run with an RBI single then Pete Alonso doubled bringing in Soto for a 2-0 Lead. In the 6th Alonso hit his team leading sixth HR of the season, a solo shot capping off the 3-0 win for the Mets third straight victory.

Alonso Trivia: This was Pete's sixth multi- RBI game of the young season, he would have 33 multi RBI games that season.

Sunday April 20th: The Mets went for the sweep on this Sunday after noon with a full house of 38, 347 in attendance at Citi Field.

In the 1st inning Francisco Lindor lead off with a HR off the Cardinals' Sonny Gray. Later, Juan Soto would add a sac fly & Pete Alonso an RBI single, for his 24th league leading RBI. 


Alonso RBI Trivia: Pete would lead the team & finish second in the NL with 126 RBIs that season. In his Mets career he has driven in 100 plus runs four times, second most to David Wright who did it five times.

The Cards bounced back with a run off Clay Homes, who gave up just one run in five innings then a two run double from Thomas Gaggese off Jose Butto who had inherited two base runners from Danny Young.

In the bottom of the 7th, Francisco Lindor collected his second hit & Juan Soto walked. With two outs Brandon Nimmo singled to center putting the Mets ahead 4-3. In the 8th, New York's three doubles from Luisangel Acuna, Tyrone Taylor & Juan Soto made it a 7-3 games as the went on to a 7-4 win & a four game sweep of the Cardinals. The Mets were now 15-7 two games up on the Phillies who were coming into town next.

Monday April 21: The Mets came into their first big series of the season, hosting the rival Philadelphia Phillies for a three game series. In the series opener the Mets Tylor Megill went up against a struggling Aaron Nola who was still looking for his first victory.

In the bottom of the 1st, Francisco Lindor led off with his third lead off HR of the season, the
second in as many games. 

Lindor Lead Off HR Trivia:  This was Lindor's third lead off HR of the season. On April 8th, he led off with a HR off the Marlins Connor Gillispie & just yesterday he led off with one off Sonny Gray. In 2025 Lindor would set a franchise record with 11 lead off HRs.

In the bottom of the 2nd, Jesse Winker led off with his first HR of the season, giving the Mets a 2-0 lead. 

In the top of the 3rd, Tylor Megill got into a two-out jam, loading the bases with a base hit & issuing a pair of walks. Megill then struck out Kyle Schwarber to get out of the inning. In the top of the 5th after hitting Alec Bohm with a pitch, he struck out Johan Rojas, Bryson Scott & Trea Turner.

Megill exited in the top of the 6th, with one out & one on. He went 5.2 innings shutting out the Phils on seven hits, striking out six & walking two.

In the bottom of the 7th, with one out, Aaron Nola gave up a base hit to Luisangel Acuna & then walked Brett Baty. Manager Rob Thomson pulled him out & brought in Jose Ruiz. Francisco 

Multi- HR Game: Lindor hit his second HR of the game, the three-run shot gave the Mets a 5-0 lead. He would have three multi- HR games that season.

Lindor Trivia: For Lindor it was his fifth HR of the season. Over his last five games he was batting .429 with four HRs & eight RBIs.

In the top of the 9th, the Phils mounted a come back as they put up four runs. Max Kranick had come out to pitch his third inning, but he gave up three straight hits. Edwin Diaz came in & served up a three run HR to Bryson Scott making it a one run 5-4 game. 

With the Phil's having their big bats coming up Diaz struck out Trea Turner & then Bryce Harper sealing the Mets win & his sixth save. The Mets win streak now had reached five games.

Tuesday April 22: Another big crowd of 36,468 came to Citi Field on a beautiful Spring evening as the Mets Griffin Canning went up against Christopher Sanchez.

In the bottom of the 1st, the hot hitting Francisco Lindor singled to right field to start the game. With two outs, Mark Vientos doubled to left field scoring Lindor with the Mets first run.

In the top of the 2nd, the Phil's came back as J.T. Realmuto doubled, Alec Bohm singled & Johan Rojas singled in Realmuto to tie it up.

In the bottom of the 2nd, the Mets answered as Luisangel Acuna drew a one out walk, then Jose Azocar, who was making his second start of the season, singled to left field. 

Francisco Lindor then singled to right field driving in his Mets second run of the game putting them ahead 2-1. 

Lindor Trivia: Over the last six games, Lindor was batting .462 with 12 hits, four HRs & eight RBIs. He had also now hit safely in nine of his last ten games.

The game remained 2-1 into the bottom of the 7th. With one out, Lindor collected his third hit of the game, his third straight multi-hit game as well, with a base hit off Tanner Banks. 

After Juan Soto grounded out, Phillie manager Rob Thomson brought in new pitcher Orion Kerkering.

The Mets best hitter in 2025, Pete Alonso collected his tenth double of the year driving in Lindor with his league leading 25th RBI. 

Alonso also hit safely in his fifth straight game raising his average to .349.

Orion Kerkering then walked Mark Vientos & threw a wild pitch advancing the runners. He then walked Jesse Winker intentionally to load the bases to get to Luis Torrens. 

But Torrens then drove a two-run single to left field, scoring both runners giving the Mets a 5-1 lead.

Torrens Trivia: Torrens who had filled in the main catching role with the injury to Francisco Alvarez was always known for his fine defense but in 20 games he had put up six doubles & eight RBIs for the Mets.

Mets pitchers continued their fine pitching, having put up a 2.37 ERA against opposing teams. Griffin Canning earned the victory to get to 3-1, pitching five innings giving up a run on seven hits with five strikeouts. 

Huascar Brazoban earned the hold with a scoreless 6th inning. AJ Minter, Ryne Stanek & Jose Butto finished it off with scoreless innings each.

Wednesday April 23: This Citi Field matinee was a thriller for the 36, 863 fans on a warm sunny spring afternoon. It was a fine pitching matchup of David Peterson & Zach Wheeler.

In the bottom of the 2nd, Mark Vientos led off with a base hit. Then Zack Wheeler struck out Jesse Winker & Tyrone Taylor. Bret Baty then blasted a long HR to the right field upper deck, for his first HR of the season giving the Mets a 2-0 lead. 

It came at the right time for Baty who was batting just .204, as Jeff McNeil was expected to return to the Mets the upcoming weekend. 

In the top of the 4th, with one out Alec Bohm singled to right field. After a force play, Weston Wilson & Johan Sosa both singled bringing in the first Phillies run. Trea Turner then tied the game with an RBI single to right field.

The score remained tied, as David Peterson held the Phil's to two runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings. Over the first four innings, Peterson would have the Phillies strand six base runners. On the other side, former Met Zack Wheeler held the Mets to two runs & five hits striking out nine in six innings.


Out at Home: In the top of the 8th, Nick Castellanos drew a leadoff walk from Mets pitcher Danny Young. With two outs, Max Kepler singled to right fielder Juan Soto. 

Soto who hasn't been hitting like his usual self, came up big here throwing home to catcher Hayden Senger who dove over to tag out Castellanos trying to score for the third out.

In the top of the 9th Edwin Diaz came on & got the side out in order. In the top of the 10th, he struck out Kyle Schwarber. 

The inherited runner Bryce Harper stole third base as Diaz never even looked him over to keep him close. Nick Castellanos then put Philadelphia ahead with an RBI base hit off Edwin Diaz. Diaz would leave the game with a cramp in his left leg.

Manager Carlos Mendoza then brought in Max Kranick who walked J.T. Realmuto & gave up a single to Alex Bohm to load the bases. But Kranick got Bryson Scott to fly out to Tyrone Taylor in center not deep enough to score the runner on third. Max Kepler then flew out to Juan Soto to end the inning.

Walk Off Hit: In the bottom of the 10th, Francisco Lindor was the inherited runner to start the inning. As Juan Soto grounded out, Lindor went to third. Pete Alonso the Mets MVP so far delivered again, driving a double to the right center field wall scoring Lindor to tie the game. 

Alonzo Trivia: The RBI was Pete's 26th league leading RBI & 11th league leading double of the season.

After a walk to Brandon Nimmo, Mark Vientos struck out. Starling Marte then delivered the exciting broken bat walk off single into shallow right field, scoring Alonso with the games winning run.

Mets Trivia: The Mets had now won seven straight games, sweeping the Phillies taking an early five game lead in the NL East. 

It was just the second time in franchise history (2015) that they put together a homestand with seven or more wins & no losses. 

After 25 games, the Mets were 18-7 tied for the second-best start in franchise history behind only the 1986 Mets.
