(2025) Brandon Nimmo Ties Franchise Record with Nine RBI Game in 19-5 Win in D.C.
This afternoon Mets manager Carlos Mendoza sent Griffin Canning to the mound. Canning a pleasant surprise for the Mets came in at 3-1 with a 3.12 ERA. He would go up against The Nat's Trevor Williams. Williams pitched for the 2022 Mets going 3-5 making nine starts in 30 appearances with a 3.21 ERA.
After a quiet 1st inning thing started brewing in the next inning.
In the top of the 2nd, Mark Vientos singled to right field. Brandon Nimmo collected his first hit of
the day with a single to centerfield. Francisco Alvarez doubled bringing in Vientos & Jeff McNeil's sac fly made it 2-0.
In the top of the 5th, Jeff McNeil hit his first HR of the season making it 3-0. Jeff began the season on the IL with this being his third game. Jeff would later hit his first triple of the season as well.
In the top of the 6th, Pete Alonso & Jesse Winker drew walks. Colin Poche came in replacing Trevor Williams. After a wild pitch, Brandon Nimmo blasted a long HR up into the right field seats, the three run gave the Mets a 6-0 lead. For Nimmo it was his 5th HR of the season & his first multi- Three RBI game since September 19th of last season.
Trivia: Nimmo had come into the game batting just .192 with a .575 OPS. As SNY pointed out, since last year's All-Star break Nimmo was batting just .190, the lowest of any player with at least 350 at bats.
The Mets inning continued as Jeff McNeil tripled for his second hit of the game & first triple of the season.
The Mets brilliant pitching continued, as Griffin Canning went five scoreless innings lowering his ERA to one of the leagues bests at 2.61. Last year Canning had the highest ERA in the majors among starters.
In the top of the 7th, Francisco Lindor led off getting hit by a pitch from new pitcher Cole Henry. Juan Soto quietly doubled to left field for his second hit of the game. Pete Alonso drove in his 27th run of year as he singled to center field scoring Lindor. Jesse Winker drew a walk to load the bases. Next Mark Vientos struck out, for the first out.
Grand Slam HR: Brandon Nimmo hit his second HR of the game, this one a grand slam giving him seven RBIs on the day. For Nimmo it was his second career grand slam & the seventh multi-HR game of his career. The seven RBIs were a career high up to that point joining 12 other Mets players who have accomplished that milestone. The Met got base hits from Francisco Alvarez & Luisangel Acuna as they batted around in the inning. Francisco Lindor came to bat & got hit by a pitch for the second time in the inning.
Mets Trivia: Lindor became just the second Mets player in franchise history to get hit by a pitch twice in the same inning, joining Frank Thomas (1965). On April 29th, one day shy of 63 years to the day, the first Mets slugger Frank Thomas was hit twice in the bottom of the 4th inning by Phillies pitchers Art Mahaffey & Fran Sullivan. In that inning the Mets scored eight runs sending ten men to the plate.
Max Kranick continued his fine pitching as well giving the Mets a scoreless inning, lowering his ERA to 2.55. In eleven appearances he had only allowed runs in two of them.
In the top of the 7th, the Mets sent 11 men to the plate scoring five runs on two hits, two hit by pitches & a walk.
In the top of the 8th, with new Nat's pitcher Eduardo Salazar on, Pete Alonso collected his second hit of the day getting his average up to .337. Jesse Winker followed with a base hit & Mark Vientos walked to load the bases.
Nimmo Ties Mets Single Game RBI Record: Brandon Nimmo stepped in & doubled down the line with the ball bouncing off the stands. Alonso & Winker both scored giving the Mets a 13-0 lead as Nimmo tied a Mets franchise record with a multi-nine RBI game.
Mets Trivia: On June 27th, 2008, in a subway series matchup, Carlos Delgado collected nineRBIs, with a grand slam HR off Ross Olendorph, a three run HR off Latroy Hawkins & a two run double off Edwar Ramirez in a 15-6 win in the Bronx.
Various Records: Since 1920 when RBI became an official stat: Nimmo is just the second MLB player with nine or more RBIs from the 6th inning on & just the third MLB player to drive in nine runs over a three-inning span.
Quotes- Brandon Nimmo: "Theres definitely a part of you that is keeping track, especially when first base coach Anton Richardson came up after the double & was like 'Well, nine RBIs, that's got to be a career high right?'"
But even Nimmo didn't realize he was tying a Mets franchise record as well as the other feats until after the game. On the day Nimmo collected four hits, two HRs nine RBIs & scored four runs.
The Mets put up two more runs in the inning, with Jeff McNeil grounding out to short, allowing Vientos to score & Luisangel Acuna driving an RBI single to center bringing in Nimmo.
In the bottom of the 8th, Jose Urina the 33-year-old veteran who was at AAA Syracuse before getting called up when A.J. Minter went out with injury, had a horrible inning. Urena gave up five runs, two HRs & five hits. Although no team has ever come back from 15 runs down, Mets fans were getting flashbacks from yesterday's Nat's comeback.
In the top of the 9th, former Met Amed Rosario was given the task to pitch to finish off the game. Rosario a one-time prospect the organization tried to sell to the fans, was on his sixth team of his nine-year career.
As Rosario lobbed pitches in, Jose Azocar singled. Pete Alonso walked. Then Jesse Winker reached base for the fourth time, with his second hit of the game, an RBI single scoring Azocar to make it 16-5.
Next Mark Viento hit a three run HR, his third HR of the year to give the Mets a 19-5 lead. It was more disappointing for the fact that it denied Brandon Nimmo a chance to drive in any more runs unless he hit a HR in order to set the Mets single game RBI record to reach ten.
Nimmo came up & grounded to second base. Although the Mets came up with two more hits in the inning, Luisangel Acuna collected his third hit of the game & Tyrone Taylor his second hit of the game, they failed to score.
Jose Urina got thru the bottom of the 9th finishing off the game.
The Mets scored a season high 19 runs & collected a season best 21 hits. They became the first team to reach twenty wins (20-9). With all the highlights, it was Brandon Nimmo the longest tenured Met who had been struggling was the star, as he finally broke out & had a career franchise record tying game.
Quotes- Brandon Nimmo: "These days don't come around that often & you just, you kind of sit back & enjoy it".
