Remembering Mets History (1967) The Mets Wives Charity Fashion Show

Wednesday July 5th 1967:
Before a scheduled Mets- Giants night game a special charity event was held at Shea Stadium's posh Diamond Club.

The Mets wives participated in the third annual fashion show charity event, raising money for Flushing Hospital & Medical Center. The show attracted some 500 guests paying $10 per plate for the lunch.(approx. $98 today).

The director for the wives was organizer Betty King. The women modeled the latest fashions in mini skirts, evening wear & dresses.

Expecting mothers, Nancy Seaver, Cecilia Swoboda & Carolyn Selma modeled the latest maternity wear as well.

Among the Mets wives participating in the event were: Nancy Seaver, Carmen Berra, Carole Kranepool, Sharon Grote, Yvonne Harrelson, Angela Jones, Cecilia Swoboda, Nadine Charles, Terry Fisher, Marlene Luplow, Betsy Sullivan, Pamela Hiller, Janet Lamabe, Penny Reynolds, Karen Johnson & Marie Taylor.

In these photos from left to right- are the first wives of Bud Harrelson & Ed Kranepool: Yvonne Harrelson & Carole Kranepool.

Next in line is Yogi's wife, Carmen Berra. At the time Yogi Berra was a Mets coach. Yogi & Carmen were married in 1949 & remained together for 65 years until Carmen's passing.

Next to Carmen is the lovely Nancy Seaver. At the time her husband Tom Seaver was a highly touted rookie starting his Hall of Fame career. In 1966 Tom & Nancy were married 54 years until Tom's passing in 2020.

Lastly, stepping out in front is the lovely Judy Fisher, Mets pitcher Jack Fisher's wife. Fisher had beaten Juan Marical & the Giants the previous afternoon.

For the game, a crowd of 29,641 showed up as the Mets hosted the San Francisco Giants.

The Giants were now ten years out of New York but still drawing crowds for many of their old fans.

Mets pitcher Bob Shaw allowed just two run on five hits in a complete game effort, but Mike McCormick held the Mets to a run in 7.1 innings with Gaylord Perry coming to finish it off 2-1.

In the top of the 7th, Hal Lanier's RBI single, drove in Willie McCovey. McCovey had driven in the first run of the game with an RBI single. Jim Davenport scored but Jim Hart was thrown out at the plate. The only Mets run came on a wild pitch scoring the Glider- Ed Charles.
