Saturday August 16th 1969: On this weekend back in the Summer of '69, the Woodstock concerts were going on in Upstate New York. Back in Queens Gil Hodges' second place Mets (62-51) were ten games back behind the Chicago Cubs, a much improvement from any other year in their seven year history. A few weeks after Neil Armstrong & the American NASA Astronauts walked on the moon, the Mets them selves were about to take some "giant steps" forward. At this point some people felt the Amazing's had run out of gas, as they had just lost seven of eleven games on a road trip thru Cincinnati, Atlanta & Houston where they were swept by the Astros. Robert Leon Huskey was born November 10, 1971, in Anadarko, Oklahoma. Butch was born into a large family of five brothers & three sisters. He spent time living with his grandmother before moving with his father to Lawton, Oklahoma. In 1989, the big six foot four; 244-pound third baseman was drafted by the New York Mets in the seventh round. Huskey won four Doubleday awards at various levels in the Mets organization, bashing 26 HRs at A ball in 1991.  Two years later he hit 25 HRs with 98 RBIs at AA Binghamton. Then in 1995 he was the International League MVP hitting 28 HRs with 87 RBIs & a .284 average at AAA Norfolk leading the Tides players in most offensive categories. Richard Allen Reed was born August 16, 1965, in Huntington, West Virginia.  The six-foot right hander was drafted out of Marshall University, way down in the 26th round of the 1986 draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Reed went 12-4 through all levels of the minors in 1988, getting a brief call up to the Pirates staff. MLB Debut: He made his MLB debut on August 8th, 1988 against the NL Eastern Champion Mets in Pittsburgh facing Bobby Ojeda. In that game, he stunned the mighty Mets hitters, pitching eight shutout innings. He allowed just three hits, to earn his first career win, a 1-0 victory.  Over the next three years, Reed pitched between the Pirates & AAA, winning the American Association Pitcher of the Year in 1991 going 14-4 with a 2.15 ERA. In 1992 he signed with the Kansas City Royals seeing action in 19 games going 3-7 with a 3.68 ERA striking out 49 batters in 100 innings.
