Remembering Mets History (2024) Six Run 9th Inning Comeback Spoils No Hitter

Wednesday September 11th, 2024: On the 23rd Anniversary of the 911 attacks, the New York Mets donned FDNY- NYPD logos on their caps in honor of the fallen. Francsico Lindor had a specially painted glove to commemorate the tragic events as well.

The Mets entered tonight's game tied with the Atlanta Braves for the third wild card spot in an exciting four team wild card fight. After a nine-game win streak the Mets lost two of three & had just been beaten by former teammate Chris Bassitt in Toronto.

Tonight was the rubber game of the series with John Schneider's disappointing Blue Jays who found themselves nine games under .500 (69-78).

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza sent Sean Manea to the mound to face the Blue Jays Bowden Francis. Since July 30th Manea was 5-1 with a 2.81 in eight starts. Bowden Francis ad won four of his last five starts. A good crowd of 29,399 came to the Rogers Center with many Mets fans in attendance.

After three scoreless innings, the Jays Vlad Guerrero Jr. & Ernie Clement both started the inning with base hits. Sean Manaea the walked Will Wagner to load the bases. Davis Schneider grounded to third base where Mark Vientos made the unassisted out, with Guerrero JR. scoring the first run of the game.

Sean Manea would allow just the one run on three hits with eight strike outs thru 6.2 innings exiting down 1-0 as his opponent was tossing a no-hitter.

Bowden Francis set the first 13 Mets down in order, before hitting Pete Alonso with a pitch in the 5th inning. Two batters later he walked Starling Marte but Francisco Alvarez flew out to end the inning.

In the top of the 6th, with two outs Jose Iglesias was hit with a pitch becoming the third Mets base runner that night, but the team was still without a hit. Bowden Francis retired the next seven batters holding the Mets hitless thru eight shutout innings.

In the top of the 9th, Jays manager, John Schneider let Bowden Francis come on to try to complete his no hitter. But Francisco Lindor hit his team leading 31st HR of the season, over the right center field fence to tie the game. John Schneider came out to remove Francis who got a nice hand from the Rogers Center crowd.

The Jays Chad Green came on & the roof caved in on the Jays. Jose Iglesias reached on a slowly hit infield single to third base. Mark Vientos & Brandon Nimmo both walked to load the bases.

Pete Alonso hit a sac fly to right field scoring Iglesias putting the Mets ahead 2-1. J.D. Martinez then drew a walk to lad them up again. Starling Marte followed with a sac fly making it 3-1. John Schneider removed Chad Green for Genesis Cabrera.

Francisco Alvarez followed with the big blow, hitting a three run HR giving the Mets the 6-1 lead. Alvarez had been struggling mightily since the All-Star break batting .165 with just three HRs & 11 RBIs.

In the inning, the Mets scored six runs collecting four hits with two HRs & were helped with four walks from the Jays staff.

In the bottom of the 9th, Ryne Stanek gave up a run on two hits & a walk having to get relieved by Edwin Diaz who managed to get Nathan Lukes to fly out for the final out.

The Mets went on to a big 6-2 comeback victory, winning 11 of their last13 games staying one game ahead of the Braves for the last wild card spot. Since June 2nd, when they were ten games under .500 the Mets have gone 55-31.
