Remembering Mets History (2024) Francisco Lindor Heats Up with Two Run 9th Inning Single

 Wednesday August 7th, 2024: After a red-hot July, Carlos Mendoza's Mets were struggling in August having lost three of their first five games in the month. 

After losing two of three in L.A. to the Angels they blew thru St. Louis winning a makeup game.

Tonight, they were in Colorado to take on Bud Black's last place Rockies (42-72) who had won four of their last six.


In the top of the 1st inning, Francisco Lindor led off with a base hit, he then stole his team leading 24th stolen base of the season. Pete Alonso singled home Lindor driving in his 60th run of the season giving the Mets a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the 1st, Paul Blackburn served up a game tying one out HR to Ezequiel Tovar.

In the top of the 2nd, Jose Iglesias led off with a base. With one out short time Met Ben Gamel singled to right field putting two on. Tyrone Taylor then singled to centerfield, Jake Crave made an error on the throw in allowing Jose Iglesias to score for the Mets second run, putting them ahead 2-1.

In the bottom of the 4th, Brenden Rogers led off with a double. After a passed ball charged to
Francisco Alvarez Kris Bryant hit a slow ground ball to third base allowing Rogers to score as he reached with a base hit while tying up the game.

Blackburn held the Rockies to two runs on five hits, striking out six walking two. Joe Butto came on pitching two scoreless innings getting the Mets to the 9th inning. The game remained tied as the Rockies pitchers also held the Mets until the 9th inning.

In the top of the 9th, with one out, Francisco Alvarez blasted a shot to deep right field & chugged out a triple. 

Pitcher Victor Vodnik then walked Ben Gamel & Tyrone Taylor to load the bases. Francisco Lindor then collected a two-run single to left field, giving the Mets the 4-2 lead. The RBI's were Lindor's team leading 65th & 66th of the season.

Francisco Lindor Trivia: From August 6th to September 6th Lindor would hit safely in 28 of 29 games, collecting 43 hits with 15 multi-hit games, batting .347 with eight HRs & 20 RBIs.

After Brandon Nimmo struck out, Jesse Winker singled to left field giving the Mets an extra run to go ahead 5-2.

Jesse Winker Trivia: Winker had come over from the Nationals a little over a week ago before the trade deadline. It was his first Mets muti-hit game & first Mets RBI.

In the bottom of the 9th, Edwin Diaz gave up another un but still got the save for his 14th of the year. 

Jose Butto Trivia: Jose Butto got the win, since moving to the bullpen in July he was now 4-0 with two saves & a 0.87 ERA in ten games, twenty innings pitched.

The win was the Mets 60th of the season, to go 60-54 as they were now a half game behind the Braves for the third wild-card spot in a tight wild card race.
