Wednesday June 5th, 2024: After a horrendous May where the Mets went 10-19, they fell to 24-33/ After losing the first two games of June, they won three games straight. No one knew it at the time but things were slowly turning around.

In this late afternoon game, Carlos Mendoza's Mets (26-35) were in the Nation's Capital taking on Dave Martinez's Nationals (27-33). Today the Mets sent Luis Severino (3-2) to the mound to face Patrick Corbin (1-6).

Luis Severino & Patrick Corbin got thru the first two innings scoreless.

In the top of the 3rd, the Mets catcher Luis Torrens came to bat.

Torrens Trivia: Luis was brought on board to help fill the void of the injured Francisco Alvarez. He was to share the catching duties with Tomas Nido & Omar Navarez. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza was familiar with Torrens in their time with the AL New York team. Torrens was playing in just his fourth Mets game, making just his second start.

With two outs, Torrens lifted Corbin's pitch over the right centerfield fence for his first HR in two years.

In the top of the 5th, the Mets added a run after Tyrone Taylor tripled & Harrison Bader drove him in with a sac fly.

Multi- HR Game: In the top of the 6th, Luis Torrens led off the inning with another HR off Corbin. It was Torrens first muti-HR game of his seven year career.

Francisco Lindor followed with a back-to-back HR making it 4-0. Pete Alonso then doubled & with one out J.D. Martinez singled putting two on. Patrick Corbin was done & Jordan Weems came on to pitch.

Mark Vientos singled in Alonso with New York's fifth run. Harrison Bader would add a two run double & Jose Iglesias an RBI single making it 8-0 Mets. As the Mets batted around in the inning, Torrens made the third out. The Mets scored six runs on seven hits sending ten men to the plate.

In the top of the 7th, they added another run as J.D. Martinez hit into a double play scoring their ninth run.

Luis Severino would allow just one run in eight innings, allowing seven hits striking out four, walking no one, as he earned his fourth win & lowered his ERA to 3.25.

In the bottom of the 9th, Danny Young closed out the game.

The Mets had won three straight games, sweeping the series with the Nationals. They went 16-7 in the month & would go on to have the best record in the league from here on thru the rest of the season.
