Remembering Mets History (2024) Mets Turn Season Around with a Seven Game Win Streak
By mid-June, the Mets were looking bad & the season seemed it would end in a wash. They had finished April at 15-14 but after a horrid May where they lost 19 of 28 games, they found themselves at 28-37deep in fourth place, already 16.5 games out of first. This seven game win streak was the turning point of the season.
They started to get quality pitching from their starters & better outings from the relievers. Offensively they put together long innings with each player making contributions to keep rallies going & hitting the occasional long ball HR. The comradery played a big part too, as they all got along well, picked each other up when someone needed it & they started to believe they could win, no matter how far down they were. Manager Carlos Mendoza led his team to what was to be an exciting season.

In the bottom of the 1st, the Mets Francisco Lindor who had moved into the leadoff spot on May 18th, led off with a double. Next, Bronxville, New York's own Harrison Bader lifted his fourth HR of the season, a two-run shot to left field giving the Mets a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the 2nd, the Marlins collected two lead off base hits then RBI double from Dane Meyers & an RBI single from Emmanuel Rivera trying up the game.

In the top of the 5th, the Marlins got back-to-back doubles from Otto Lopez & Bryan De La Cruz, then an RBI single from Jazz Chisholm to get to within a run at 5-4.
In the bottom of the 5th, Staling Marte added a solo HR. In the 7th, Pete Alonso singled, Marte walked & Tyrone Taylor also singled to load the bases.
Mark Vientos added an RBI base hit & Francisco Alvarez's grounder allowed Marte to score giving New York an 8-4 lead.
In the bottom of the 8th Francisco Lindor led off with his 11th HR of the season. Harrison Bader collected his second hit with a single. Starling Marte collected his second hit & RBI of the game with a single to center scoring Bader finishing off the 10-4 win.
David Peterson earned the win, with Dedniel Nunez putting in 2.1 scoreless innings. Reed Garrett finished it off.
Thursday June 13th: The Mets Luis Severino got the start entering the game at 4-2 with a 3.25 ERA having pitched well in the first two months for the struggling team. Tonight, he would hold the Marlins scoreless thru the first five innings, until giving up a solo HR to Jake Burger in the 6th.
Drew Smith came on in the top of the 7th & gave up a HR to Jazz Chisholm giving the Marlins a 2-0 lead.
In the 7th, Anthony Bender walked two Mets & gave up a double to J.D. Martinez. Starling Marte's ground out allowed Brandon Nimmo to score the Mets first run, narrowing the lead to 2-1.
The score remained that way until the bottom of the 9th.
With Tanner Scott on the mound for Miami, Francisco Lindor drew the leadoff walk. With one out, J.D. Martinez proved to be the hero of the game hitting a walk off HR to right center field giving the Mets the win.
J.D. Trivia: For the Mets DH J.D. Martinez, he had now hit safely in 11 of his last 13 games with 11 RBIs. In this win streak, he would drive in runs in five straight games, with three straight multi-RBI games totaling nine RBIs in that five-game span.
Friday June 14th: The Mets opened up a weekend series hosting Mike Shildt's San Diego Padres. The Padres like the Mets had yet to get hot on their way to their 93-win season.
The Padres sluggers featured Manny Machado, Fernando Tatis Jr., Jurickson Profar & Jackson Merrill. Dylan Cease, Michael King & Yu Darvish led a strong pitching staff.
Tonight, with storms delaying the game, the Mets Sean Manaea went up against Matt Waldron.
In the bottom of the 3rd, Jeff McNeil drew a walk & Brandon Nimmo singled putting two on with two out for the hot hitting J.D. Martinez. Martinez delivered a two run double to right field, for the second of his three straight muti-RBI games.In the top of the 5th, Jackson Merrill hit his 6th HR of the season making it 2-1. Sean Manaea (5 innings) & the Mets bullpen held the Padres to a run in the 2-1 win.In the top of the 9th, after Jurickson Profar led off with a single, Edwin Diaz was able to strikeout Manny Machado & end the game with Jake Cronenworth looking at a third strike.
Saturday June 15th: On Saturday afternoon, Jose Quintana went up against Adam Mazur.
Jose Quintana Trivia: Quintana entered the game at 1-5 with a 5.29 having lost his last four decisions. But today he allowed just one run over six innings, striking out his season best up to that point, six batters.
From June 15th to July 29th, Quintana would go on to win five of his next six decisions holding opponents to a .185 batting average.
In the top of the 4th, Francisco Lindor & Brandon Nimmo hit back-to-back doubles giving the Mets a 1-0 lead. Nimmo would add an RBI single later in the game for a multi-hit multi-RBI game.
A pitching change brought Jhony Brito in & he was greeted by J.D. Martinez hitting a two run
HR. In the bottom of the 7th, Martinez would hit his second HR of the game, a solo shot giving the Mets a 3-1 lead.
For Martinez it was his eighth HR & his only multi- HR game of the season. He had his third straight muti-RBI game & fourth straight game with a run driven in. He collected three hits on the day, one of his four muti-three hit games on the season.
The win was the Mets fourth straight, getting them to 32-37.
Sunday June 16th: On this Father's Day, the Mets were looking for the series sweep. They had two series sweeps on the season already taking a three-game set from the Pirates in April & the Nationals in early June.
The Mets sent Tylor Megill to the mound to face Dylan Cease. Cease who would go on to win 14 games on the season, had his worst outing of the year allowing seven runs on seven hits including two HRs.
In the bottom of the 1st, Francisco Lindor led off with a HR to right field. Next, Brandon Nimmo singled & J.D. Martinez walked. Pete Alonso then slugged a three run HR to deep left field giving the Mets a 4-1 lead.
In the 4th inning, Luis Torrens singled & advanced on a wild pitch. Harrison Bader drove him in with a double to left field. Dylan Cease threw another wild pitch, advancing Bader to third. Francisco Lindor's line drive scored Bader for the sixth Mets run.
J.D. Martinez added an RBI double making it 7-1. It was the fifth straight game Martinez had driven in a run & his third double in the last four games.
The Padres wouldn't go down quietly. In the top of the 8th, they sent nine men to the plate, scoring four runs off relivers Jake Diekman & Drew Smith, collecting three hits with the help of two walks & a Mets error making it a 7-6 game.
In the bottom of the 8th, the Padres Jeremiah Estrada came on to pitch & was greeted with a Luis Torrens HR. Jeff McNeil then doubled & Harrison Bader dropped a base hit to left field. Bader stole second, then Francisco Lindor loaded the bases when he drew a walk.
Brandon Nimmo hit a grounder up the middle for an RBI single scoring McNeil. With one out, Pete Alonso added a two-run single to left, giving the Mets an 11-6 lead & Pete a multi-five RBI game.
Pete Alonso Trivia: Alonso would have the wo multi-five RBI games on the season. Overall, he had 23 multi-RBI games
Tylor Megill collected the victory as the Mets swept the series & had a five-game win streak to end the homestand.
Monday June 17th: The Mets went to the Dallas Forth Worth metroplex to face Bruce Bochy's reigning World Champion Rangers. Texas was struggling five games under .500. A nice crowd of 32,590 came out to see the Mets David Peterson went up against Jon Gray.In the top of the 1st, Francisco Lindor led off with a base hit. During the Mets win streak, Lindor batted .308 with eight hits, nine runs scored & six RBIs.
J.D. Martinez continued his hot hitting with a base hit. Then Pete Alonso coming off his five-RBI game continued with an RBI single to right.
In the top of the 2nd, the Mets sent nine men to the plates coring six runs. Mark Vientos led off with a single, two batters later Jeff McNeil singled as well. Francisco Lindor & Brandon Nimmo followed with RBI singles giving the Mets a 3-0 lead.
After J.D. Martinez flew out, Pete Alonso drove in his second run of the game with a base hit. Next DJ Stewart hit a three run HR, making it 7-0 Mets. It was his fifth & last HR of the season.
DJ Stewart Trivia: In 74 games with the 2024 Mets, Stewart hit five HRs & drove in 19 runs batting just .177 with a .622 OPS. He was sent to AAA Syracuse at the end of July, returning for three games in September.
In the top of the 4th, Lindor collected his second hit, then the now hot hitting Brandon Nimmo hit
his 8th HR of the season. Nimmo would have three hits in the game, his fourth straight muti-hit game, totaling ten hits in that span.
In the 5th, Lindor & Nimmo would have RBI hits making it 11-2 Mets. They tacked on two more runs when Mark Vientos doubled & Tyrone Taylor got hit with a pitch. Francisco Alvarez's base hit scored Vientos, then Jeff McNeil brought in Taylor when he grounded to second base.
Trivia: The Mets won their sixth straight game 14-2, their second highest run output so far on the season. On April 11th, they scored a season high 16 runs. On July 29th they would put up 15 runs in a romp over the Twins at Citi Field, making this win their third highest offensive output of the year.
David Peterson Trivia: Peterson who didn't make his first start until May 29th, earned the win to get to 3-0. He would collect five wins before taking his first loss on July 28th. Peterson would finish the year at 10-3 posting a 2.90 ERA.
Tuesday June 18th: On a sad for baseball & the Mets organization, Willie Mays passed away at the age of the age of 93.
Another big crowd of 36,274 came to Global Life Field as Luis Severino took on Michael Lorenzen. Today would be another big offensive game, with both teams totaling 13 runs & 19 hits.
In the top of the 2nd, Mark Vientos put New York on the board with is sixth HR of the season. In the bottom of the 5th, the Rangers got to Luis Severino, three straight singles, then a three run HR by Josh Smith & solo HR from Wyatt Langford made it 6-2 Texas.
In the top of the 6th, Brandon Nimmo led off with a HR bringing the Mets a bit closer 6-3.
Brandon Nimmo Trivia: For Nimmo, it was HRs in back-to-back games, as well as an RBI in four straight games. Brandon was also in the midst of a ten-game hit streak. From June 18th to June 25th, he would hit HRs in five of eight games with 11 RBIs.
In the top of the 7th, with Jose Leclerc pitching, Mark Vientos & Francisco Alvarez singled. Vientos collected three hits for his second straight multi-three hit game. Leclerc then walked DJ Stewart to load the bases.
Bruce Bochy brought in former Met David Robertson to pitch. He got Francisco Lindor to ground out, but Vientos scored from third getting the Mets to within two runs 6-4.In the top of the 8th, Pete Alonso & Starling Marte hit back-to-back singles. Francisco Alvarez followed with a game tying two run double. For Alvarez it was back-to-back multi-two hit two-RBI games. Reed Garrett came on & held the Rangers scoreless in the 8th.
In the top of the 9th, facing Kirby Yates, Brandon Nimmo drew a walk. J.D. Martinez got aboard due to catcher's interference.
Polar Bear Trivia: Pete Alonso then delivered the game winning hit with an RBI double to left field. For Alonzo it was the third of four straight games he would drive in at least one run. He would total ten RBIs in the four-game stretch, hitting two HRs.
Edwin Diaz closed out the game with his seventh save, Reed Garrett collected his seventh win to get to 7-2 & all of a sudden, the Mets were looking good on a seven-game win streak.
The Mets were now 35-37 just two games below .500. The Mets would win 12 of 14 games in the mid June stretch & sweep a two game subway series. The first of two sweeps with the AL New York team.
From June 12th to the end of the season, at the start of their seven-game win streak, they would go 60-39 with the best record in baseball. They would clinch a wild card spot make it all the way to the NLCS.
