  Jack Seale Heidemann was born July 11, 1949, in Brenham Texas. The six-foot infielder was the first-round draft pick of the Cleveland Indians (the 11th pick overall) in 1967. Heidemann batted .305 at A ball & played a solid infield.  Cleveland Indians Career: He made it to the big leagues as the Indians starting shortstop by 1970. He got a hit in his first MLB at bat, but only batted .211 on the season. He posted a .961 fielding % making 23 errors at short stop (2nd most in the AL) while turning 79 double plays. He led the league in sac flies (10) hitting 14 doubles with 37 RBIs. He hit 6 HRs & was the only starting Indian not to hit double figures in HRs. In 1971 he improved to the fourth highest fielding percentage at shortstop (.977) but his season was cut short when he suffered a concussion.  In a game against the White Sox, future Mets coach Tom McGraw hit a pop fly to shallow left field.   Friday July 9th, 2021: Luis Rojas' first place Mets (46-38) hosted Derek Shelton's 5th place, Pittsburgh Pirates (32-55). The Mets entered the nights action four games up the Washington Nats & four and a half games up on both the Phillies & Braves. Tonight, the Mets sent Taijuan Walker to the mound, who learned that he was going to the 2021 All Star Game, replacing Jacob deGrom, representing the Mets. Walker would face JT Brubaker, in front of 20,350 at Citi Field. The Pirates scored first, when Taijuan Walker hit Michael Perez with the bases loaded.  In the Mets 3rd, Jonathan Villar led off with a HR, it was his 7th HR of the year, his first of two on this night. James McCann singled & later scored on the hot hitting Brandon Nimmo's double to centerfield. The Mets took a 2-1 lead. Monday July 6th, 1970: Gil Hodges reigning World Champion Mets (43-36) were in first place, just a half game in front of the Pittsburgh Pirates. This evening New York hosted Red Schoendienst's fourth place St. Louis Cardinals (39-40). The Cards were trying to get back to .500. A good crowd of 36,801 came out to Shea Stadium on this Monday evening. The Mets' starter was Jim McAndrew (3-6) as he took on the Cardinals pitcher Jerry Reuss (1-1).  Trivia: Jerry Ruess was just in his second season, the left hander would win 14 or more games, eight times in his 22-year career, spending the majority of his time with the Pittsburgh Pirates (1974-1978) & the Los Angeles Dodgers (1979-1987).  Eric Wade Cammack was born August 14th 1975 in Netherland Texas. The six foot one, righthanded pitcher was drafted out of college, at Lamar University. After two seasons in A ball, he was promoted to  AA Binghamton in 1999, where he went 4-2 with 83 strike outs in 56.2 innings, with a 2.38 ERA. He then was promoted to AAA Norfolk for nine games to close out that season. In 2000 at AAA Norfolk, he went to 6-2 with a 1.70 ERA, striking out 67 batters in 63.2 innings.  Cammack was first called up to the Mets on April 28th, 2000 where he came in relief of Mike Hampton in a game at Colorado. He allowed four runs on four hits in a 12-5 Mets loss.  Cammack was back in AAA Norfolk, returning to the Mets three more times during the year, pitching in eight games overall. Saturday, July 7th, 1962: Casey Stengel's New York Mets (23-57) hosted Johnny Keane's fourth place St. Louis Cardinals (45-38) in the first game of a double header at the Polo Grounds.   In the battle of pitchers with the last name of Jackson; the Mets sent Al Jackson (4-9) one of their better pitchers on the staff to the mound. Al would win just eight games for the 1962 Mets that lost 120 games, that was good enough for second on the staff. He would lead the team in wins in each of the next two seasons. Today he went up against the Cardinals veteran Larry Jackson (7-8). Larry would pitch from 1955-1968 & win 194 games in his career (194-183) with a 3.40 ERA. In 1964 he the NL in wins (24) while with the Chicago Cubs. Trivia: One of the early Mets folk heroes was Marv Throneberry.
