Remembering Mets History (2021) Mets Score Season High 13 Runs

 Friday July 9th, 2021: Luis Rojas' first place Mets (46-38) hosted Derek Shelton's 5th place, Pittsburgh Pirates (32-55). The Mets entered the nights action four games up the Washington Nats & four and a half games up on both the Phillies & Braves.

Tonight, the Mets sent Taijuan Walker to the mound, who learned that he was going to the 2021 All Star Game, replacing Jacob deGrom, representing the Mets. Walker would face JT Brubaker, in front of 20,350 at Citi Field.


The Pirates scored first, when Taijuan Walker hit Michael Perez with the bases loaded. 

In the Mets 3rd, Jonathan Villar led off with a HR, it was his 7th HR of the year, his first of two on this night. James McCann singled & later scored on the hot hitting Brandon Nimmo's double to centerfield. The Mets took a 2-1 lead.

In the 5th, Jared Oliva doubled for the Pirates & stole third base. 

The pitcher JT Brubaker drew a walk & then Pirate, All Star, Adam Frazier  singled to right, tying up the game at two.

In the Mets home 6th inning, they would send 13 batters to the plate, hit two HRs, collect five hits
& draw four walks, while scoring a season high ten runs.

It began with Brandon Nimmo singling to right. Francisco Lindor then walked. Dom Smith singled to right, scoring Nimmo. Pete Alonso followed with his 16th HR of the year, just his second at Citi Field. Alonso now had five HRs & 13 RBIs in his last dozen games. The Mets now led 6-2.

Brubaker, left to reliever Sam Howard. He was greeted by a Jeff McNeil base hit. Michael Conforto & James McCaan then drew walks around Jonathan Villar's strike out. 


With the bases loaded, Jose Peraza was hit by a pitch, scoring McNeil. To make matters worse for himself, Howard walked Nimmon bringing in the Mets 8th run.

Kyle Keller came on to pitch, to Francisco Lindor with the bases loaded. Lindor blasted his first Mets grand slam over the left center field wall. The Mets now had a 12-2 lead.

Later in the 7th inning, Jonathan Villar hit his second HR of the night, a solo shot to left center, giving the Mets their season high 13 runs.

All Star Taijuan Walker, went five inning for the Mets, allowing two runs on four hits, with 2 Ks & three walks. He would go into the break with a 2.50 ERA (8th best in the NL). 

Aaron Loup came on & earned the win to go 3-0 with a 1.73 ERA. He would pitch a scoreless 6th inning. 

In the 7th, Nick Tropeano made his Mets debut, Tropeano had been picked up by the Mets on June 11th. He would allow a HR to Rodolfo Castro & four hits over two innings. 

Yennsy Diaz, making his 6th Mets appearance closed it out, he gave up a run, a hit & two walks.

The Mets won the game 13-3, ending the night in first place 4.5 games ahead of the Braves, five up on the Phillies & 5.5 on the Nats.
