Remembering Mets History (2025) Juan Soto's First Two Mets Multi HR Games Come Within a Week
In the 2025 off season, the Mets signed the biggest free agent on the market in Juan Soto giving him a ridiculous 15 year, $765 million contract.
Since joining the Mets Juan Soto had been struggling, thru April he was batting just .241 with three HRs & 12 RBIs in his first 31 games.
Thursday May 1st, 2015: The Mets were still doing well at 21-11 with a 3.5 game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies.
On this night, the Mets were hosting Torey Lovello's Arizona Diamondbacks (17-14) in the rubber game of a three game set in front of a big crowd of 36,239 at Citi Field. New York sent Kodai Senga (2-2) against Zac Gallen (2-3).
Kodai Senga & Zac Gallen matched zero's thru the first three innings.
In the top of the 4th, Kodai walked the lead off batter Josh Naylor, he was forced on a grounder by Eugenio Suarez. With one out, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. singled to right field putting two on. Alek Thomas then singled bringing in the first run of the game.
In the top of the 5th, Genesis Cabrera walked Pavin Smith & Josh Naylor doubled. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza brought in Max Kranic. Eugenio Suarez hit a sac fly bringing in Pavin Smith with Arizona's second run.
In the bottom of the 6th, Juan Soto put the Mets on the board with a solo HR off Zac Gallen, his fourth HR of the year.
Trivia: The HR was Soto's first at Citi Field as a Mets player, breaking an 0-56 homerless streak at Citi Field. It was also his first HR in two weeks.
In the bottom of the 8th, Soto would hit another solo HR, his fifth HR of the year coming off Kevin
Ginkel. It was his first multi-HR game as a Mets player, as Soto would have five with the Mets that season.
Arizona added to their lead with HRs by Geraldo Perdomo off Max Kranick & another by Tim Tawa off Reed Garrett leading to their 4-2 win.
The loss broke the Mets streak of ten straight winning series at Citi Field.
May 7th, 2025: Over the last week the Mets had gone on the road, dropped two of three to the Cardinals in St. Louis then split the first two games in Arizona. In this afternoon rubber game of the series, Kodai Senga (3-2) went up against Merrill Kelly (3-1) in front of 25,729 fans at Chase Field.
Kodai Senga held the D-backs scoreless thru six innings, allowing just two hits. Senga had lowered his season ERA to 1.16. Thru his first seven starts he had allowed runs in just three games, allowing more than one run twice. He was having a fine season until his injury on May 31st.
In the top of the 6th inning, Juan Soto hit a solo HR off Merrill Kelly breaking the scoreless tie. It was Juan's sixth HR of the year his first since his multi-two HR game on May 1st.
In the top of the 7th, Luis Torrens doubled & was driven home by Luisangel Acuna's base hit. Jeff McNeil then tripled scoring Acuna with the Mets third run.
Jeff McNeil Triples Trivia: Jeff McNeil would lead the team with five triples that year. In his eight year Mets career, Jeff hit 18 triples placing him at a tie for #19 on the Mets all time list.
In the top of the 8th inning, Juan Soto led off with a HR off Jalen Beeks giving the Mets a 4-0 lead. For Soto it was his seventh HR of the year & his second multi- HR game in seven days.Soto Multi- HR Trivia: It was the 25th multi- HR game of Soto's career tying him with Mel Ott, Eddie Mathews & Alex Rodriguez for most multi-HR games by a player before their 27th birthday. Just one shy of Jimmie Foxx's record 26.
Soto would have five multi-HR games that season, reaching 27 passing Jimmie Foxx in June.
In the bottom of the 8th, Corbin Carroll added a HR for Arizona.
In the top of the 9th, Jose Azocar & Tyrone Taylor both walked. Francisco Lindor added a two run double making it a 5-1 Mets lead. Lindor stole third base then scored on Juan Soto's sac fly, with his third RBI of the game.
It was Soto's biggest Mets RBI game so far up to that point in the season. Juan would have seven games with three or more runs driven in that year & 22 overall multi-RBI games.
The Mets went on to a 7-1 victory.
