Luis Torrens: Mets Catcher (2024 -2025)

 Luis Alfonso Torrens Saez was born May 2, 1996, in Valencia Venezuela.

In 2012 Luis was signed by the AL New York club as an international free agent. After spending three years in their minor leagues, he tore his labrum, needed surgery & missed the 2015 season. 

In 2016 he was selected as in the Rule V draft by the Cincinnati Reds then was quickly traded to the San Diego Padres.

MLB Career: In 2017 he made the Padres roster as a backup catcher, despite never playing above the A ball level. He would make 31 starts at catcher appearing in 56 games batting just .163. He spent 2018 & parts of 2019 back in the minors.

In August of 2020 Torrens was traded to the Seattle Mariners where he spent parts of three
seasons. 

In 2021 he began the season batting just .178 thru mid-May & was optioned to AAA. On June 15th, Torrens returned & in his first seven games collected nine hits with four multi-hit games. He stayed on sharing catchers' duties with Tom Murphy & Cal Raleigh, as well as hitting in the DH spot. 

Overall be played in 108 games batting .243 with 15 HRs & 47 RBIs posting a .730 OPS. In 59 games as the DH, Torrens he posted a .722 OPS. That season he had seven game winning RBIs with 20 multi-hit games & collected four multi-four RBI games.

In August 2022 he was designated for assignment then cleared waivers.

Winning Pitcher: On October 4th, 2022, in the first game of a double header with the Tigers, Torrens came on to pitch in the top of the 10th inning of a 5-5 tie. 

Although he gave up a run the Mariners won the game with two runs in the bottom of the 10th. He became the first Mariner position player to ever earn a victory.

In 2023 Torrens signed a minor league deal with the Chicago Cubs, getting into 15 games at the MLB level. 

In the next year he would be with the Orioles, Nationals, AL New York team & Mariners again

before getting traded to the New York Mets on May 31st, 2024. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza remembered the fine defensive skills Torrens had showed him while with the AL New York team.

Mets Career: When Francisco Alvarez went down with injury, Torrens was added to the roster eventually taking over as the main back up over Tomas Nido & Omar Navarez upon Alvarez's return.

Multi- HR Game: On June 5th, in a 9-1 win in D.C. Torrens had his first multi-HR game hitting a pair of solo HRs off the Nat's Patrick Corbin. 


London Series & An MLB First: On June 9th, in London, the Mets put up three runs to comeback from a 4-3 deficit. 

In the bottom of the 9th with the bases loaded, Torrens fielded a ball from the Phillies Nick Castellanos stepped on the plate & threw to Pete Alonso at first base to get the out at first base completing the only 2-3 game ending double play in MLB history.

Pitching Appearance: On July 5th, he made his second career pitching appearance, finishing off the 8th inning of a 14-2 Mets loss in Pittsburgh.

Multi- Three RBI Games: On July 6th in a 5-2 win at Pittsburgh, Torrens hit a three run bases
clearing double, while having a three hit game as well. The Mets went on to win seven of eight games. On July 29th in a 15-2 Mets win in Minnesota, he had another multi- three hit three RBI game. Torrens had his average over .300 (.3040 at the end of July.

On the season he appeared in 44 games behind the plate, making one error posting a .997 fielding%. Torrens known for his fine defense threw out 46% of base runners trying to steal, the best average in the majors. At bat he hit .229 with 3 HRs &15 RBIs.

2024 Post Season: In the post season he made two appearances, the first as a defensive replacement finishing off Game #1 of the NLDS win over the Phillies. In the NLCS loss to the Dodgers he got one at bat popping out in Game #4.

2025: Torrens found himself as the Mets main catcher to start the season, as Francisco Alvarez
would miss the first three weeks of action.

In his first two games, he collected doubled in each game. On March 31st, Torrens hit his first HR of the season, a two-run shot off the Marlins George Soriano in a 10-4 Mets win in South Florida. 

On April 2nd, in 6-5 win in Florida led by Pete Alonso's three run 8th inning HR, Torrens defense helped the win. In the bottom of the 8th, he threw out Griffin Conine trying to steal. Then, he handled a low throw from Brett Baty & was able to tag out runner Xavier Edwards at home.

On April 5th with one out & one on in the bottom of the 9th inning of a tied game with the Blue Jays, Torrens singled to left field advancing Jose Siri who would score the winning run on Francisco Lindor's sac fly. 

On April 18th, in a tied game with the Cardinals in the bottom of the 8th inning, Torrens doubled off former Met Phil Maton bringing in Brandon Nimmo with the go ahead run. St. Louis tied the game but Francisco Lindor won it with a walk off HR.

Multi-Three Hit - Multi RBI Game: On April 13th, Torrens collected three hits, including an RBI single & double in the Mets 8-0 shut out over the A's in West Sacramento. At the end of the game, he was batting .333.

From April 22nd to April 27th, he hit safely in three straight games, driving in two runs in the 8-7 loss to the Nat's on April 27th.

Thru April Torrens was batting .258 with seven doubles, one HR ten RBIs & a .712 OPS. Behind
the plate he threw out 5 of the 11 runners trying to steal (45%).

Career Stats: In his eight-year career he is batting .229 with 209 hits 45 doubles three triples 104 RBIs & 84 runs scored. He posted a .290 on base % & .650 OPS.

Torrens has thrown out 28% of runners trying to steal, with a .997 fielding %, making five errors, turning six double plays.

Family: Luis & his wife Andrea have a daughter, Lola.
