Frankie Montas: Former Mets Pitcher (2025)

Frankie Montas Luna was born March 21st, 1993 in the Dominican Republic. The six foot-two right hander originally signed with the Boston Red Sox at age 16. In 2013 he would go to the White Sox in a three team deal involving six players.

MLB Career: On September 2nd 2015, he debuted with the White Sox, pitching one scoreless inning in a 3-0 loss to the Twins. That September he was 2-0 in seven appearances giving up eight runs in 15.0 innings. In December 2015 he was involved in another three team deal going to the Dodgers. He spent 2016 in the Dodgers minor leagues then was sent to the Oakland Athletics.

A's Career: Montas spent parts of six seasons with Oakland posting winning records all but once going an overall 35-30 with a 3.70 ERA. In 2019 he was 9-2 posting a 2.63 ERA in 16 appearances, notching 103 strikeouts in 96 innings. But he then tested positive for a substance violating MLB's drug prevention rules & was suspended for the rest of the year. The A's finished second that season then lost the Wild Card game to Tampa.

2020 Post Season: In the 2020 ALWC series he was the winning pitcher in the Game #3 series clinching win over the Chicago White Sox. In the ALDS loss to the Astros Montas was the losing pitcher in the Game #4 series clincher at Houston. He gave up five runs including HRs to Michael Brantley & Chris Correa. 

In 2021 Montas had his best season, leading the A's staff that featured Chris Bassitt & Sean Manaea as well. Montas had career highs in wins (13)- fifth most in the AL) strike outs (207-4th most in the AL) innings (187- 3rd most in the AL) & a league leading 32 starts, while posting a 3.38 ERA. That year he won the September AL Pitcher of the Month Award going 3-0 with 40 Ks in 37 innings.

At the 2022 trade deadline he was sent to the AL New York team going 1-3, making a brief appearance in the ALCS loss to Houston giving up a 7th inning HR to Jeremy Pena in Game #1. In 2023 he was out most of the year after needing shoulder surgery.

In 2024 he pitched in Cincinnati, even getting the Opening Day start there, going an overall 4-8 before get traded to the Milwaukee Brewers at the deadline where he went 3-3 in 11 starts.

2024 Post Season: In the NLWC Series loss to the Mets, Montas got the Game #2 start, getting hit for three runs,  just one earned on Brandon Nimmo's 1st inning, RBI single. In 3.2 innings he gave up six hits striking out three & walking one. He exited down 3-1 but Milwaukee came back for a late inning win.

Mets Career: In the off season, Mets GM David Sterns continued with his obsession with his former team, signing Montas to the Mets staff. Things got off to a bad start when he suffered a lat-strain in Spring Training & was shut down for four months before making his debut.

On June 24th, he made his Mets debut, pitching five shut out innings in an eventual loss to the Braves at Citi Field. On June 29th in Pittsburgh, Montas was beat up for six runs in a 12-1 debacle, with HRs from Tommy Pham & Onell Cruz taking his first loss.

From July 5th thru July 22nd, he won three straight starts winning a subway series game at Citi Field, then a victory in Kansas City & a win over the Angels at home. But his success was short lived.

On July 28th in San Diego, the Padres tagged him for five runs, then in his next start the Giants got him for a season high seven runs (all earned). 

In August it was announced he'd be moved to the bullpen, but after two relief appearances he suffered a ulnar collateral ligament injury ending his season. 

In nine games, seven starts he was 3-2 with a 4.20 ERA for New York. After the end of the season he was designated for assignment.

Career Stats: In his ten year career he is 47-48 with a 4.20 ERA, 792 strike outs 277 walks in 783 innings pitched in 169 appearances (136 starts).

Family: Frankie & his wife Nicholette have three children.
