(2025) David Peterson Pitches a Six Hit Complete Game Shut Out
Tonight David Peterson (4-2) got the start, Peterson had given up three runs to the Dodgers taking no decision in the 6-5 loss. Prior to that he had won his last two decisions allowing three runs in 13.1 innings. On May 25th, in a 5-2 win over the Dodgers at Citi Field, he went into the 8th inning for the first time on the year.
Tonight, Peterson went up against the Nationals (30-36) Jake Irvin (5-2) in front of a big crowd of 40.681 at Citi Field.
David Peterson started out the game retiring the first three batters of the first inning.
In the bottom of the 1st, Brandon Nimmo drew a one out walk & then with two outs, Pete Alonso doubled bringing in Nimmo with the Mets first run. It was Alonso's 20th RBI in the month of June as he has driven in runs in eight of the ten games this month.David Peterson retired the first seven batters of the game getting into the 3rd inning when Luis Garcia singled into centerfield. Then Jacob Young grounded into a double play to end the inning.
In the bottom of the 3rd, Francisco Lindor collected his 12th double of the year, then Juan Soto hit his 13th HR of the year, his second in two nights giving the Mets a 3-0 lead. Thru the first ten games of June Soto has four HRs & eight RBIs.
After a base hit in the 4th inning, David Peterson retired the next seven batters in a row getting to the top of the 7th inning. In the 7th the Nat's collected back-to-back base hits, then Peterson struck out Andres Chaparro & Nathaniel Lowe. He then got Alex Call to ground out to Pete Alonso at first to get out of the inning as the Citi Field crowd roared.
In the bottom of the 5th, Brandon Nimmo hit his first HR of the night, in the bottom of the 7th he
hit his second HR of the night, giving him his second multi-HR game of the season, the last being his nine RBI game against the Nat's on April 28th. Over his last 11 games Nimmo has four HRs & nine RBIs.
Later in the inning, Nats pitcher Jackson Rutledge hit Pete Alonso with a pitch in the left arm. Mets broadcaster & former pitcher Ron Darling was not happy with the pitch

I'm sitting here angry because the Mets have hit some HRs, the best hitter or most powerful player gets hit & to this day it still makes me angry. It's terrible I have to grow up at some point."As the inning ended Gary Cohen responded saying "Ronnie is gonna be firing a baseball at somebody before you know it".
In the top of the 8th, Peterson struck out Riley Adams for his fifth K of the night, his third in the last two innings. Luis Garcia then doubled.
Play at the Plate: Jacob Young then singled to center field to Tyrone Taylor who had just come into the game at the top of the inning. Taylor threw home to catcher Luis Torrens who tagged out Garcia trying to score. After review, the call on the field was upheld.
CJ Adams then flew out to end the inning.
In the Mets dugout, Peterson gave his manager a look & said he wanted to go back out there. The players all in the dugout wondered what the conversation was about & if their manager would let him go back out there. Carlos Mendoza indeed let his pitcher go out for the 9th inning.
With the crowd on their feet, Amed Rosario lined out to Bret Baty for the first out. Peterson then struck out James Wood for the second out & his sixth strike out of the night. Peterson then got Andres Chaparro to ground out for the final out.
David Peterson pitched a six-hit complete game shutout, the first Mets pitcher to throw a complete game shut out on the season. It was the first complete nine inning game he pitched in his MLB career. On the night he gave up six hits, struck out six & walked no one.
Peterson hugged his catcher, Luis Torrens whom he gave much of the credit too as being on the same page with him all night. All his teammates including his manager, Carlos Mendoza & pitching coach Jeremy Hefner gave the smiling happy, Peterson hugs in wishing him congratulations.
Trivia: Peterson (5-2) is now fourth in the NL in ERA (2.49) behind teammate Kodai Senga who is atop the league. The Mets lead the league in ERA as a team as well. The Mets are also 8-0 in games where Peterson has made a start this season.
