Remebering Mets History: (2015) Mets Sweep Nats Go Up By Seven Games (CES-PE-DES)

September 9th 2015: The 2015 version of the Amazing Mets came into tonight's game looking for a sweep & hoping to put another nail in the Nationals season.

The Mets entered the game with a six game lead over Washington in the NL Eastern Division. Jacob DeGrom (12-7 / 2.40 ERA) took the hill for New York against Washington's Steven Strasburg (8-6 / 4.35 ERA).

The Nats struck first as Bryce Harper hit a 1st inning solo HR to make it 1-0. In the 2nd, the Mets tied it with a solo HR from Travis d'Arnaud, his 11th on the season.

In the 4th inning Harper doubled & was brought in by a Clint Robinson base hit. Next, Robinson made a huge base running blunder after an Ian Desmond base hit when he came off the third base bag, and got tagged out by David Wright.

Strasburg struck out 12, rolling along as he held the Mets down until the 8th inning. Terry Collins brought in Kelly Johnson to pinch hit for Wilmer Flores & he delivered with a game tying HR. Next Curtis Granderson reached base for the second time on the night & the hottest hitting Met, Yoenis Cespedes came to bat. Cespedes blasted the go ahead two run homer, making it 4-2 Mets. Cespedes rounded the bases & came into a very excited & very happy Mets dugout being greeted by all his team mates.

For Cespedes it was his 32nd HR of the year, his 14th since joining the Mets on August 1st. Cespedes brought his RBI total to 97 on the year, 36 as a Met. CES-PE-DES! CES-PE-DES!

In the home 8th,  Bryce Harper added another solo HR off of Tyler Clippard, the Nats got another base hit but then Michael Conforto made a sliding catch in left field to end any kind of rally the Nats thought they may be starting.

In the home 9th, Lucas Duda doubled & was moved over to third by Travis d'Arnaud. Eric Young Jr. came in to pinch run & scored after Conforto hit a hard bouncer to second base that couldn't be handled by Danny Espinosa. The Mets took a 5-3 lead & it was all they needed.

In the 9th Jeurys Familia struck out Ian Desmond & Wilson Ramos, then got former Met Matt denDecker to fly out to Cespedes to end it. For Familia it was save #39, just four shy of the Mets single season record.

The Mets won it 5-3, swept the Nats in their ball park & won the last six straight against them. New York went up seven games on the Nationals with 23 left to play, making their magic number 17.
