Remembering Mets History (2023) Pete Alonso Has Two Multi-HR Five RBI Games Three Days Apart

By late July 2022, Pete Alonso had been struggling, batting just .212 on the season & had not hit a HR in over two weeks.

There were some signs of him breaking out of the slump as he had come into the game hitting safely in four straight games.

The Mets season was a surprisingly bad one after the success of 2022. At this point they were 46-53 already 18.5 games out of first place.

Tuesday July 25th, 2023:
In the top of the 1st inning, Brandon Nimmo led off the game with a double to right field. After the next two outs were recorded, Pete Alonso collected his first hit of the game with an RBI single to left scoring Nimmo for a 1-0 Mets lead.

In the top of the 3rd, with two outs Francisco Lindor doubled to left field, Jeff McNeil then drew a walk. Pete Alonso followed with a two run HR to left field giving the Mets a 4-0 lead. It was Petes first HR since July 6th & his 27th of the season.

The score remained that way into the top of the 6th, when Alonso led off the inning with his second HR of the game, his 28th of the season. It was his second multi-HR game of the season & 14th of his career.
Daniel Vogelbach followed with a back-to-back HR putting the Mets up 6-0.

Justin Verlander shut out the AL New York team over six innings allowing just two hits, he struck out six & walked four.

In the top of the 7th, Francisco Lindo collected an infield hit, his second hit of his three-hit game, advancing on a bad throw from Anthony Volpe. Next, Jeff McNeil lined a base hit up the middle scoring Lindor giving the Mets a 7-0 lead.

The AL New York team came up with three runs over the next two innings making it 7-3.

In the top of the 9th, Brandon Nimmo drew a one out walk & Francisco Lindor collected his third hit with a base hit to centerfield.

Lindor then took off & stole second putting two men in scoring position for Jeff McNeil who drove a double into right field, bringing in both runners to cap off the 9-3 Mets win.

McNeil had three RBIs in the game, his first of three multi-three or more RBI games on the season.

The Mets lost the next game, then beat the National's 2-1 at Citi Field. Kodai Senga allowed one run in six innings, with David Peterson & Brooks Raley finishing off the 2-1 win, led by Daniel Vogelbach's RBI base hit & Mark Canha's RBI sac fly. In the two games Alonso went 1-7.

In this next game short time Met, Max Scherzer went up against MacKenzie Gore. The youngster Gore had won three of his last four decisions.

Friday July 28th 2023:
In the top of the 1st, Max Scherzer retired the side in order. In the top of the 2nd, the Nat's loaded the bases but Alex Call grounded out to end the inning.

He retired the next six batters in a row & held the Nat's scoreless until Luis Garcia hit a HR to lead off the 7th inning.

In the bottom of the 5th, MacKenzie Gore walked the first two Mets batters Brett Baty & Francisco Alvarez. He retired the next two Mets bringing up Pete Alonso. Alonso connected for a three run HR his 29th of the season, putting the Mets up 3-0.

In the bottom of the 7th, new Nat's pitcher Rico Garcia retired the first two batters before
surrendering a base hit to Francisco Lindor. Pete Alonso followed with his second HR of the game, the two-run shot gave him another multi-five RBI game his second in three days.

30 Plus HR Seasons: For Pete it was the fourth time in his career he reached the 30 plus HR mark, joining Mike Piazza as the only player in franchise history to do so.

The only season Pete did not hit 30 or more HRs was in the Covid-19 pandemic shortened season.

The Mets went on to the 5-1 win, with Alonso driving in all the Mets runs. It was his second multi- three RBI game of the season. It was also his third multi-HR game of the season & 15th of his career.

At the end of the week Alonso was named the NL Player of the Week, the third time he had won the award as he hit four HRs with 12 RBIs batting 308 with eight hits.
