Remembering Mets History: (1999) Mike Piazza HRs in Four Straight Games

Monday, August 16th 1999: Bobby Valentine's first place Mets (73-47) were on a streak of winning four of their last five games. Over the weekend the Mets had taken two of three in San Francisco,  Mike Piazza had hit HRs in all three games.

Piazza had a huge weekend with nine hits, three HRs & six RBIs. On Saturday he had a four hit day driving in three runs in the Mets 6-1 win over the Giants. His 4th inning HR was a  solo shot off Russ Ortiz.

On Sunday he had two more hits, a HR & two RBIs in the Mets 12-5 win.

On Monday, the Mets rolled into San Diego's Qualcomm Stadium facing Bruce Bochy's third place Padres (54-65).  Mets manager Bobby Valentine sent young Octavio Dotel to the mound to face Sterling Hitchcock.

Starting Lineups

In the top of the 2nd, Piazza continued his HR streak, hitting a solo shot, his fourth straight HR in four games, his  27th of the season. On the hill, Dotel was having himself a fine game. In the second he walked Tony Gwynn, but did not allow any hits, nor any more walks going into the 7th inning. In the home 7th, the Mets were up 2-0 after a solo Hr from Rickey Henderson.

With a no hitter still in tact, Dotel walked the first two Padres of the inning. Then Phil Nevin ruined the no hit bid, hitting a three run HR. Now down 3-0 Dotel, struck out two of the next three batters & got a ground outto end the inning.

In the 7th, Alfonzo & John Olerud both singled. Mike Piazza came up & grounded into a double play. But Alfonzo scored on the play tying up the game. The game wentto extra innings, where Alfonzo was the hero hitting a 10th inning HR off Will Cunnane.
