It was a big game indeed, but one Mets player outshined everyone. It was all about Edgardo Alfonzo on this night as he set or tied six different Mets club records going 6-6 with three HRs, a double, four extra base hits & five RBIs.
Alfonzo started out in the 1st inning with his first HR. In the 2nd inning, he would single & score on Mike Piazza's two run HR. The Mets scored six runs in that inning on their way to the rout of the Astros.
In the 4th inning, with Rickey Henderson on base, Alfonzo connected for his second HR of the game.
In the 6th inning he led off with a solo HR, his third of the game &his 23rd of the season. He topped off his huge night with his sixth hit, a two run double in the 9th inning scoring Todd Pratt & Benny Agbayani. What a night for Alfonzo in the Mets 17-1 victory.
Darryl Hamilton collected four hits on this night, driving in three runs as well. Rickey Henderson & Shawon Dunston collected two hits each, as six other Mets players added one hit each to the 21 hit attack.
The 17 runs were a Mets season high in 1999 for the Wild Card Champion Mets.
