Remembering Mets History: (1979) Mets Score Season High 18 Runs As Lee Mazzilli Scores Five Runs

Tuesday August 14th 1979: Joe Torre's sixth place Mets (49-66) came to Atlanta Fulton County Stadium to play Bobby Cox's sixth place Braves (47-73) in front of a small crowd of 5770.

The starters were Dock Ellis for New York & Tony Brizzolara for Atlanta. He would last into the second inning after giving up five runs. The Braves would have six pitchers enter the game with the first five all giving up at least one run.

It was a big night for the '79 Mets, as they scored a season best 18 runs, while knocking out 17 hits. These were numbers the '79 Mets did not put up too much.

Starting Lineups

Lee Mazzilli was one of many Mets heroes of the evening. He scored five runs, on the night, hitting a 1st inning two run HR, his 12th HR of the year. Mazzilli would later triple (his fourth of the year) & drew two walks. He was swinging the bat real well hitting .314 on the season.

In the Mets 2nd, Joel Youngblood was hit by a pitch, Doug Flynn singled & Frank Taveras walked. With the bases loaded, Alex Trevino doubled bringing in all three runners.  Mazzilli followed with a Fielders Choice bringing in Trevino. Ed Kranepool added a double, scoring Mazzilli, making it 7-0 Mets. The Mets sent ten men to the plate in the inning, with three hits, two walks & a hit by pitch.

In the 3rd, inning the Mets loaded the bases as Frank Taveras doubled. Alex Trevino then got an infield single & Mazzilli walked. Richie Hebner singled, and Mazzilli alertly scored from first base on Braves fielding error. It was now 10-2 Mets.

Doug Flynn & Frank Taveras added RBI singles in the 4th making it 12-5. In the 5th inning, Mazzilli got aboard again with that lead off triple to right field. Then a short time Met, more famous for being a Cub, Jose Cardenal singled, bringing in Mazzili  with the 13th run.

In the 8th, the Mets once again sent ten men to the plate; singles by Cardenal, Joel Youngblood & Frank Taveras made it 14-5. Alex Trevino & Lee Mazzilli then walked and both scored on hits by John Stearns & veteran Ed Kranepool.

This capped off the big 18-5 Mets win, with Andy Hassler earning the victory in relief of Ellis, Dale Murray finished it off.

Every Met in the starting line up got a hit that day with Met catcher Alex Trevino leading the charge with three hits, three RBIs & four runs scored. Trevino, although not an everyday, player, was hitting .324. Lee Mazzilli, Ed Kranepool, Joel Youngblood, Doug Flynn, Frank Taveras & Jose Cardenal all collected two hits.

Brizzolara (44 career games) took the loss, giving up six runs. Preston Hanna allowed two runs, Adrian Devine (allowed two runs, Joey McLaughlin allowed one run & Bo McLaughlin allowed five runs.
