Remembering Mets History: (2010) Jonathon Niese Tosses the 34th One Hitter In Mets History

Thursday June 10th 2010: This was the second game of a doubleheader at Citi Field, with Jerry Manuel's second place Mets (32-28)hosting Bud Black's second place San Diego Padres (35-25).

The Padres beat Johan Santana 4-2 in the first game. 28, 072 fans were on hand in the nightcap to see Jonathon Niese (2-2) start against Jon Garland (6-3).

In the third inning, Niese gave up a leadoff double to Chris Denorfia, it would be the only hit he would allow all night. Niese was nothing less than spectacular as he struck out eight & walked no one, finishing off the complete game shut out.

The Mets would start their scoring for Niese in the 2nd inning. Chris Carter doubled Rod Barajas singled & Jeff Francoer singled in Carter with the Mets first run. In the 3rd, Niese led off with a walk, and Jose Reyes singled. With one out David Wright grounded out but Niese scored the second run. Ike Davis followed with an RBI single making it 3-0 Mets.

It was all New York needed on Jonathan Niese's big night, one hit shy of a perfect game.

It was the 34th one hitter in Mets history, one of two that Mets pitchers would throw that year. R.A. Dickey tossed one of his three career Mets' one hitters on August 13th 2010.
