2015 World Series Game #5- The Mets Season Is Over

Sunday November 1st, 2015- World Series Game #5- Citi Field Queens, New York

It was do or die for the New York Mets tonight, and the dream was over, the team had truly ran out of gas. Bad fielding & no hitting lost them this world series. Terry Collins gave "the Dark Knight" Matt Harvey the ball to go up against the KC Royals.

Matt Harvey was outstanding through eight innings, putting in a valiant effort. He put the Mets on his back & said come on lets go, unfortunately they didn't give him enough support. Curtis Granderson, led off the Mets 1st inning with a HR, making it 1-0. It was his third HR of the World Series,

Trivia: Curtis Granderson tied Donn Clendenon (1969) with a Mets record for most HRs in a World Series (3).

Matt Harvey didn't allow a single until the 3rd inning then quickly erased that with a double play ball. In the 4th, he got Citi Field fired up by striking out the side. In the 5th he started out by striking out Salvador Perez. He then walked Alex Gordon but got the next two batters looking at third strikes. He would strike out nine on the evening.

In the 6th the Mets got one run but blew a huge chance, once again the bats were dead. Granderson walked, Wright singled & Murphy reached on an Eric Hosmer error. With no one out, Yoenis Cespedes fouled a ball off his knee cap, he then popped out & had to be removed from the game. Lucas Duda's sac fly was the only run the Mets produced as Granderson scored his second run of the game. Travis d'Arnaud grounded out to end the threat.

He gave up singles in both the 6th & 7th innings but a strong 8th where he retired the side earned him the chance at a complete game. In the dugout as pitching coach Dan Warthen came over to him, Harvey said there is no way I'm coming out of this game. He then walked over to his manager & said the same thing.

Citi Field agreed as the continued their chants of "Harvey Harvey Harvey" all of America watching on TV agreed & so did Collins. Harvey came out for the 9th, but it was not to be. A lead off walk & a Eric Hosmer double made it 2-1. Terry Collins came out to pull Harvey, he left to a standing ovation. It was a valiant effort!

Quotes: Manager Terry Collins on leaving in Harvey- "I let my heart get in the way of my gut".

Trivia: Tony Bennett did an outstanding rendition of God Bless America in the 7th inning.

The Royals struck again by not hitting the ball out of the infield. This is how you blow World Series games. A grounder to Lucas Duda made it one out but the runner advanced to third.

Then came a bouncer to the left side of the infield. David Wright took, when maybe he should have let Wilmer Flores take it & covered third base. Instead he checked the runner threw to first g& ot the out but Hosmer, who had a lead, broke for home. Lucas Duda's throw was no where near the plate & the Royals tied it.

Besides giving up late inning leads the Mets did the other thing they have been doing in the World Series & that's not hit in the extra innings. It was another bunch of blanks in the 9th, 10th & 11th just giving the Royals the moment they were waiting for.

That came in the 12th, after good relief efforts by Familia & Jonathon Neise the ball went to Addison Reed, who up until now had a good post season.

Salvador Perez singled & Dyson came in to pinch run. He stole second, another thing the Mets let the Royals do whenever they wanted, steal bases.

Dyson went to third on a ground out & then scored on a Christian Colon hit. The Royals took the lead 3-2. Daniel Murphy then got an easy grounder to him & for an encore (just in case we forget the play from last night) he booted it as well. The flood gates opened the Royals went on to score five runs in the inning & win the World Series. The Mets had just four hits on the night.

The Mets 2015 season is over, they are the National League Champs but could not bring home the Championship. Hopefully a week from now if this pain goes away, we can look back & say it was a good year up until this week.

In the Series the Royals outscored the Mets 27-19.
They out hit the Mets 47-35. The Mets made six errors to the Royals two.

Trivia: If anyone told us Mets fans in Spring Training, you'd be in the World Series this year, I think we'd say I doubt that but I'd be thrilled if it happened.
