Remembering Mets History: (2015) Mets Hit Franchise Record 8 HRs In David Wrights Return

August 24th 2015: Terry Collins 1st place Mets (67-56) fresh off a big three game sweep of the Colorado Rockies, rolled their offensive juggernaut into Philadelphia for the start of a three game series with the last place Phillies  (50-75).

With Jacob deGrom on the mound the Mets were expecting another low scoring game against them. But deGrom was not on his game tonight, having one of the worst games of his season, 2.2 innings 7 runs 8 hits 3 walks 3 strike outs. The Mets offense certainly made up for it & picked him up.

Tonight marked the return of Mets Captain David Wright who had been out of action since mid April. It was certainly a different team since Wright had left. In his return, his first at bat Wright joined the party & hit an upper deck HR to put te Mets on the board.

In the top of the 3rd the Mets were down 4-1 but Juan Lagares hit his 5th HR of the year narrowing the margin to 4-2. In the Phils 3rd Dominick Brown added a two run HR making it 7-3 Philadelphia. This may have seemed like game over, but not with these Mets, they didn't even get started yet.

In the 4th David Wright reached with another hit, then Wilmer Flores blasted a two run HR making it 7-4. Travis d'Arnaud added a solo HR making it 7-5. In the 5th Flores hit his 14th HR of the year, a three run shot scoring Yoenis Cespedes & Daniel Murphy, giving the Mets an 8-7 lead. Michael Cuddyer added a solo shot his 9th of the year, 9-7 Mets.

In the 6th inning, Daniel Murphy hit his 10th HR of the year making it 11-7. With two men on d'Arnaud then doubled home both runs increasing the Mets lead to 13-7. In the 7th, Michael Conforto hit a pinch hit double & was brought home by Juan Lagares base hit, 14-7 Mets.

In the 9th inning the Mets set a franchise record, when Yoenis Cespedes joined the party hitting his 24th HR of the year, the HR was the eighth one hit on the night by New York.

In the clubs 53 years they had never hit 8 HRs in a game, the 15 extra base hits were also a club record. The Mets went on to a 16-7 win & moved up 5 1/2 games over the second place Washington Nats, their biggest lead of the season.
