Randall Lee Tate was born October 23, 1952 in Florence Alabama. Tate was drafted in the 5th round of the 1972 draft. He was expected to do a lot for the Mets and was put in the 1975 starting rotation as a rookie. In his first start he got no decision throwing 8 innings against the Phillies, allowing three runs on three hits. On August 4th he had a no hitter going into the 8th inning against Montreal. Then the Expos scored three runs and Tate took the loss. Overall he went 5-13 with 99 strikeouts and a 4.45 ERA.
Randy goes down in history as being the only player to ever record 47 plate appearances and never get a hit. Yep, he was one of the worst hitters ever, going 0-41 with one walk.
Tate spent the 1976 season with Tidewater not able to crack the Mets squad the season. He tore his rotator cuff and his career was over at age 24.
