2000 NLDS Game #2: Mets Tie Series One Game Each

October 5th 2000 -NLDS Game#2: The Mets regrouped after losing game one, and sent Al Leiter to the mound at AT&T Park to face Sean Estes in Game #2 of the NLDS. New York got some help from Estes in the 2nd, he ht Robin Ventura with a pitch then walked Benny Agbayani & Mike Bordick. In stepped the hot hitting little new comer, Timo Perez who singled in the first two Mets runs. Ellis Burks doubled home Jeff Kent putting the Giants on the board in the bottom of the inning.

The score remained 2-1 until the 9th inning. In the top of the inning, Timo Perez got his third hit of the night with two outs. Then Edgardo Alfonzo blasted a two run HR over Barry Bonds head in left center field, making it 4-1 New York. Al Leiter exited with a runner on first and the 4-1 lead in the bottom of the 9th. Through 8 innings he had only allowed one run, five hits with six strikeouts. The unreliable Armando Benitez then gave up a three run HR to JT Snow, tying the game.

But these Mets didn’t go down so easy, in the top of the 10th inning, pinch hitter Daryl Hamilton doubled off Felix Rodriguez with two outs. The stage was set for Jay Payton to be a hero, singling to centerfield scoring the winning run.

After Benitez gave up a lead off single, Bobby V yanked him in favor of Johnny Franco. The veteran Franco retired the side in order and the Mets went back to New York tied one game each.
