Today In Mets History; 1979- Mets Score 18 Runs / Mazzilli Scores 5 Runs

August 14, 1979: Thirty years ago, Bobby Cox was still in the dugout managing the Braves, and Joe Torre was still managing but he was the Mets skipper. A measly crowd of 5770 came out on a humid Georgia night to see the two last place teams go at it.

It was a big night for the Mets, as their bats enjoyed a rare night in 1979. They scored a season best 18 runs, while knocking out 17 hits. Lee Mazzilli scored five runs, while gathering two hits, two RBIs & two walks. He was swinging the bat real well hitting .314 on the season. Met catcher Alex Trevino had three hits, three RBIs and scored four runs himself, Trevino although he didn't play everyday, was hitting .324.

Some of the names in the line up were interesting, guys like Frank Tavares, Jose Cardinal ( I didn't even remember him as a Met?), Doug Flynn, Joel Youngblood, and long time Met Ed Kranepool all had two hits in the game. Krane had a rare firstbase start on the evening & even drove in two runs. Ritchie Hebner (there's a name for ya) & John Stearns also had two RBIs.
The Braves used six pitchers on the night, including two guys named, McLaughlin & a starter named Tony Brizzolara (44 career games), he sold Italian Ices in the off season! (kidding). The Mets had some more great names pitching that night; Doc Ellis, Andy Hassler (who earned the win) & Dale Murray.
