Toady In Mets History: 1963- Jim Hickman Becomes the First Met to Hit For the Cycle

August 7, 1963: The 10,000 fans who came out to the Polo Grounds on this day caught a piece of Mets history. The Mets had only 35 wins by August 7,1963. Facing the mighty Cards was a tough task for the second year Mets, but on this day they looked great. Mets pitcher Tracy Stallard pitched a complete game victory, allowing only three runs on six hits while striking out four, earning his 5th win of the year (5-10).

The offensive star of the day was Jim Hickman. He became the first Met to ever hit for the cycle, doing it in order. In the first inning he singled to start out the Mets first, off Ernie Broglio. In the third after the Mets scored twice on consecutive ground outs, he doubled. In the bottom of the fourth he tripled in the Polo Grounds deep sections scoring Stallard putting New York up 3-1. Add in RBI singles by Duke Snider & Frank Tho
mas and the Mets had a 6-1 lead. Then Hickman completed the cycle, leading off the bottom of the sixth against Barney Schultz hitting his 10th HR of the year. He came to bat once more but flew out to left field. But Hickmans spot is secured in Mets history.
Hickman (an original Met) would play with the team until 1967. He hit his Mets career high 17 HRs in 1963. Overall he hit 60 HRs with 210 RBIs & a .241 average in his Mets career.
