Michael Ausley Maddux was born August 27, 1961 in Dayton, Ohio. He is the younger brother of future Hall of Fame pitcher, Greg Maddux. After attending the University of El Paso he was drafted by the Phillies in 1982. The tall right hander started out as a starter with the 1986 Phillies going 3-7 with a 5.42 ERA. After that he became a career middle reliever going to the Dodgers & Padres, where he went 7-2 in 1991. In December of 1992 he was traded to the Mets for pitcher Roger Mason. Unfortunately the Mets got the wrong Maddux brother, but to his credit Mike wasn’t all that bad. He had 5 saves in 1993 and a good ERA of 3.60, although he posted a 3-8 record. The next season he went 2-1 with 2 more saves but his ERA jumped over five and he was granted free
agency. He would play for 10 teams in his 14 year career ending in 2000 with a 39-37 lifetime record and a 4.09 ERA.Maddux is an avid fisherman, hunter & golfer during the off season. He spent 2003-2008 as pitching coach for the Milwaukee Brewers, leading them to a wold card birth & second best staff of 2008. This season (2009) he is pitching coach for the Texas Rangers.
