July 28, 1970: The old New York Giants fans still come out in droves when their team is in town. Over 50,000 fans come out to Shea to see the San Francisco Giants take on the 2nd place Mets. Tonight’s 12-2 route puts the Mets only 1 game back in the standings. Jim McAndrew has an easy time with all the run support, he pitched a complete game allowing 2 runs, only 5 hits, while striking out five, the win put him at 6-8 on the year. The star at the plate was Donn Clendenon; he set a then cub record by driving
in seven runs. In the 1st inning Clendenon’s sac fly scored Bud Harrelson with the 1st run of the game. Clendenon only had two hits on the day, both were three run HRs. In the 3rd he hit a blast off Rich Robertson scoring Bud Harrelson & Kenny Singleton. In the 4th he hit another three run blast off Mike Davison scoring McAndrew & Jerry Grote. The seven RBI da
y would be a Met record until Dave Kingman broke it in 1976. His mark was broken By Carlos Delgado in 2008. Also on the day in 1970, Ron Swoboda homered, Bud Harrelson had three hits driving in two runs and Al Weis added an RBI.
