Today in Mets History; 2004 - Tom Glavine One Hits the Rockies

May 23rd 2004: A good Sunday afternoon crowd of 37,486 saw the 3rd place Mets (3 games back) take on Clint Hurdle's Colorado Rockies. There wasn't too many thrills in 2004 nor in Tom Glavines Mets career outside of the 2006 season. But on this day Glavine would bring a no hitter into the eighth inning, until first baseman Kit Pellow doubled to right field. Pellow would hit .234 in 2004, the last season of his brief three year career.

Glavine pitched a one hit shutout as the Mets beat Colorado 4-0. It was the first complete game Glavine had pitched in two years since he was in Atlanta. He struck out eight and only walked one batter, lowering his ERA to a fine 2.13 earning his 6th win against only two losses.

The Mets jumped on top early as Kazuo Matsui & Cliff Floyd hit solo home runs in the 1st inning off former Met, Shawn Estes. Floyd would drive in another run in a ground out, and Tom Glavine would even have an RBI single to add to his big day.
Glavine would end up 11-14 in 2004, Art Howe would be fired as manager, and the Mets would move into the Pedro Martinez / Willie Randolph era.
