Today In Mets History: 1999- Roger Cedeno Steals Four Bases

May 14, 1999: On a Friday night in Philadelphia in front of a crowd of 21,000 Bobby Valentines Mets beat Terry Francona's Phillies 7-3. The Mets & Phils were battling for 2nd place the Mets only 1 1/2 games behind Atlanta with the Phils only 1/2 game behind the Mets.

Masato Yoshii got his 3rd win, with Turk Wendell, Armondo Benitez, & John Franco all helping out & beating Chad Ojea. Although three Mets hit home runs; John Olerud (7th), Edgardo Alfonzo (6th) & Robin Ventura (5th) it was Roger Cedeno who made Mets history.

Cedeno became only the 2nd Met in history, besides Vince Coleman to steal four bases in a game. He had a field day off Phillie pitching & catcher Mike Lieberthal. In the 1st inning just before Olerud's HR Cedeno stole third off Ojea. In the 5th he stole second off Ojea, and would score on an Olerud sac fly. In the ninth inning he singled off Wayne Gnomes and stole second then third base and would score on Alfonzos ground out. All in all Cedeno went 2-5 with 4 steals, and 2 runs scored. He would end up with 66 steals on the season and bat .313 before being traded with Octavio Dotel for Mike Hampton & Derek Bell. The Mets won the wild card & got within two games of the World Series in 1999.
