Today In Mets History: 1973 - Seaver Strikes Out 16 at CandleStick Park

May 29, 1973: The Mets were struggling on this rough West Coast road trip, which also brought them through Cincinatti, losing 9 of 11. It was their worst stretch of the '73 Pennant season, although they were only 5 1/2 games out of 1st place. On this day at Candlestick Park in San Francisco, it was Tom Seaver who needed to stop the losing streak.

Seaver struck out 16 Giants, throwing a three hit complete game, going to 6-3 on the year with a league leading 1.71 ERA. The Giants Bobby Bonds had a tough game, striking out all four times he batted, and Willie McCovey wiffed three times. Seaver struck every batter out in the line up at least once. He would lead the league in strikeouts for the 3d time in four years & win his 2nd Cy Young Award in 1973. Seaver also helped out his offense, in the 5th inning he hit a solo HR off Jim Barr for the first score of the game. It was his sixth career HR & his 1st of the 1973 season.

Although McCovey struck out three times, he also hit a two run HR to put the Giants ahead. The Mets trailed going into the 9th inning 2-1. Pinch hitter Ken Boswell drew a walk, Bud Harrelson singled and Seaver got aboard with a bunt base hit. Reliever Randy Moffitt walked Wayne Garrett to tie the game, and then Felix Millan put the Mets ahead with a two run single. George the Stork Theodore drove in the 5th run with a pinch hit sac fly. Seaver struck out the first two batters in the 9th, and got Ed Goodson to ground out to John Milner to end the game.
